I want a CHEAP Digital SLR.

I'm going from a cheap SD400 to one of these.

Which should I go for.

And if any owners of one of these cameras got portait pictures and want to post em let me see em.

D40!

it's a toss up really. you can't go wrong with either.

just a heads up incase you got a Sams near you, the Sam's club near me had the D40 for $550 and 3 year insurance for $30 and if you used the Sam'scredit card there was no interest for 3 months. i copped mine somewhere else for 500 with free memory card and case with a hookup

Just use photoshop for the raw files. or get CaptureNX from the inter webs. The D40 comes with Nikons PictureProject thatyou can use also. How much are you spending on a flash?

Never used the D40 or any Nikon, so I can't really provide any insight on comparing the two.

The major buying point that sold me on a Canon is that most of the lenses for the film SLRs also work for the digital SLRs and I heard that is not the case for Nikon.

Yeah, I would have gotten the XTi for that reason also, but you can still use AF lenses on the D40, but you would have to autofocus yourself which inst toobad. The price difference pretty much sealed it for me though.

was in the same dilemma a month ago.

came out to the xt. why? 8mp, more compatible lens, cheaper, and more.

i got my xt for 440 shipped. you can probably get it cheaper.and i love the sound it makes lol

In my opinion as a Imaging Specialist at Circuit Cit, I wouldnt buy neither. I would save a lil more and step up to the D60 or D40x or Rebel XTi. I personallyam a big SONY DSLR fan now. I just recenntly purchased the DSLRA200 and it is one of the best SLRs I have used to date. I have read many reviews and viewed thesony image quality tests and the SONY wins hands down. Professionals do not even compare the D40, D40x, REBEL XT, REBEL XTi to the SONY A100 or A20. All ofthese cameras are in the same entry level class. It is compared to the CANON 30D, 40D and NIKON D200. This is just my opinion. At a further note. It reallydoesnt matter which one you pick. You honestly will be happy either way.

The Sony A100 is still a budget DSLR, and it IS compared to the D40/x, XT, XTi, D80 etc.
