I wouldn’t say I work in the industry, but I know some people. Most have a connect who works for Nike/Jordan/adidas/whoever.
My coworker’s brother works for Jordan Brand, and he hooks the family up all the time, but he’s also got industry people on his list that he makes sure they get mailed new releases/samples/etc.
Once you’re somebody, you meet people and/or you meet the owner themselves and they’ll make sure someone reaches out to you and becomes that connect.

It's also different today. All these brands are willing to send these actors, athletes and musicians free clothes and shoes, free promotion. A lot of people see them wearing it and want it.
