I think it's a territory thing. I'd call the park ranger when I want to leave and pee on an outside corner of the house to claim it as mine to piss the lion off even more when he shows up again.
To answer the question. I'd buy bear spray or strong pepper spray in any activity that potentially puts me in a predator's territory. Going to Yosemite tomorrow and best believe that I'm going to have a trigger finger on that thing if I go to an area where I can't see beyond 15-20 feet. Rather trust a spray that's guaranteed to hit an animal in the nose to disable its senses instead of the risk of missing my shots in close range.
