WASHINGTON -- The D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles service center in Georgetown closed early Wednesday because of law enforcement activity, according to DMV officials.Law enforcement sources told News4 that FBI agents raided the service center in the lower level of the Georgetown Park Mall and took several people into custody. News4's Pat Collins reported that a female DMV employee was arrested in connection with a scheme to sell D.C. driver's licenses.

The scheme began about a year ago, sources said. An investigation began when a DMV service integrity officer, whose job it is to detect irregularities in the department, noticed some suspicious things in the books at the Georgetown service center. At an afternoon news conference, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty said the city will not tolerate any corruption, Collins reported. DMV Director Lucinda Babers said most of the products have value for illegal sale and that they have to be in a state of constant readiness. After an August 2004 FBI raid at the same service center, a teller was charged with receiving a bribe in a fake driver's license scheme.Check the .C. DMV Web site or call 202-727-5000 to find out if the Georgetown service center will open Thursday.Stay with News4 and nbc4.com for more information.
