JaVale McGee 'furthest' away from return among injured Nuggets
DENVER -- Denver Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said Wednesday that while he expects all four of the "missing Nuggets" who are all recovering from major leg injuries to miss Wednesday night's preseason tilt vs. the Thunder, that three of the four players should be back by the start of the regular season.
But of the four, Shaw said that center JaVale McGee is "probably the furthest away" from being back. McGee suffered a stress fracture in his left tibia last November, and missed all but five games last season after an initial prognosis expected him to return in the spring.
Meanwhile, Danilo Gallinari, Nate Robinson, and J.J. Hickson, all of whom are recovering from ACL tears, are expected to be ready for opening night. (Hickson will not be available for five games due to a suspension for violation of the NBA's anti-drug policy.) Gallo missed the entire 2014 season after a botched procedure to repair his knee, requiring a second surgery on his torn ACL. Robinson and Hickson went down in the spring for a Nuggets team that never got to see what they were capable of.
Also of note, Shaw said that rookie Gary Harris is already the Nuggets' best perimeter defender. "He just has a knack, those instincts on the defensive side of the ball," Shaw said.
