This is a crushing loss for an already fragile Ivory Coast squad. Bigger loss than Essien to Ghana, or Ballack to Germany.

Reports: he's out.

Might be out.

PS: for anyone complaining about WC threads, I feel you sort of, but this would be like Kobe getting injured before the Finals.

It's like a sign that the African nations aren't going to go far despite the home-field.

Futbol is my #1 sport and the WC is like the second coming of Jesus, but this should have gone in one of the threads...They really are getting out of hand..

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

So thats Ballack, Essien, Bosingwa, and possibly Drogba .. Obi Mikel is still struggling to find form from his knee surgery.. This is some wackness.. All from one club??

More football threads please...someone start threads for every single team and lets take over this place.

That's awful.

I was just reading the Sports Illustrated article about him and how important this WC was.

Damn shame.

Very sad indeed, but those who have seen Ivory Coast's performance in the African Cup of Nations know that they wouldn't have gone through an elite squad whether they had Drogba or not..

anyone watch Drogba last world cup closely?

He was playing defense, midfield and striker.

Crushing loss though for Cote d' Ivory

Right now is the worst time to get injured. Honduras has also been hit with Carlo Costly's injury and Chile with Humberto Suazo, both strikers and important to their respective team

...and there's a topic to settle a dispute between friends in the sports section

let us have futbol talk for this month

i have no idea if there is any truth to this.
World Cup 2010: Cote d’Ivoire’s Didier Drogba Could Be Passed Fit To Play - Report
After a day of confusion, the Chelsea ace will go to South Africa after all...

French media sources have performed a swift u-turn on the news that Didier Drogba has been ruled out of the World Cup after sustaining a fractured elbow in the first 20 minutes of Cote d’Ivoire’s friendly encounter with Japan in Sion, Switzerland earlier today.

L'Equipe and Canal+ both claimed that the Chelsea striker's hopes of playing had completely vanished after Ivory Coast boss Sven-Goran Eriksson had earlier confirmed the injury and admitted he was "concerned" about his skipper's hopes of competing in South Africa.

However, L'Equipe has now proclaimed that Drogba will undergo surgery and could be fit in ten days. Indeed, the publication goes as far to say that "[Drogba] could well participate in the first match for the Elephants, which is against Portugal on June 15."

With only a quarter of an hour gone in the game, Drogba clashed with Japanese defender Tulio, leaving him a little dazed. Tulio, the scorer of both a goal and an own goal against England last week, went for the ball with his leg raised, while Drogba's right arm came up simultaneously. The resulting collision between the Ivorian's elbow and Tulio's knee was purely accidental, but the Chelsea forward was ultimately withdrawn due to the injury. CSKA Moscow’s Seydou Doumbia was quickly brought into the frey.

Drogba, who is rated as the third best player in the world by the Castrol Rankings, had already made his influence tell in the early stages of the game, when his free kick was deflected home by Brazilian-born Tulio.

Despite the loss of Drogba, the Ivorians went on to win the game, which was played over three 45 minute periods, 2-0, though they will not relish a trip to South Africa without their recognised star forward.

Well damn I dont like Chel$ea but that is some rotten luck right there.

I was poking fun in the other thread about his whining but I hope he gets to play in the WC.

Nike's commercial jinxing players???

Who else was in that commercial that got hurt though? But if you're saying just players not going to SA, then you have a point.

That is sooo freaki wack. Really wanted to see how he'd perfom in the WC. If he has what I had last month then I wouldn't be suprised if he played. Get screws in his arm and hope to be in playing condition. All these injuries are coming outta nowhere

Yeah I was referring to the fact that Drogba might miss out due to this injury and Ronaldinho was left off the squad....not purely the fact that players were getting hurt but missing out on the Worldcup they were going to "shape" in general.

I was only joking of course.
