Do we underrate Gary Payton?

Funny cause I was JUST talking about this yesterday with the guys in my office.

We did an all-time players NBA draft (6 guys drafting) with a 10 deep roster. My starting PG was Kidd. I took GP as my backup, and some of the guys claimed he wasnt good enough to warrant me taking him.

I was like are yall serious??

But yea, dude was the truth. One of my favorite guards ever.

One of the best guards of all time. Solid offensively. And his nickname tells you all you need to know about his D. GP is appreciated

There's no greater example of what Payton could do than the '96 WCF. He absolutely destroyed John Stockton. Completely locked him up the first five games. Hell, don't even watch, just look a the box scores from that series. When Stockton finally woke up, GP went off for 31-6-5 in Game 7 (and a nice Karl Malone choke job at the end).

I remember getting his autograph as a kid at the San Leandro Boys & Girls Club...it was his summer league camp in SL since he from Oakland.

Saw him again this year at LA Live for March Madness...he was walking around ESPN Zone with his other tall %#% homie. I was bugging he didn't roll with any security or nothing.

Not to mention he did LOCK down Jordan in those finals.....made him work for everything.

The Sonics actually did a pretty decent job on Jordan overall in the '96 Finals. He only broke 30 points once, and when Karl finally pulled his head out and stuck Payton on him, he didn't get out of the low to mid 20s. When you compare what Jordan did in all his other Finals, it's pretty damn impressive.

I think those Laker years hurt him but in my book he is Top 5. He's from the bay which is

along with JKidd.

But when he was guarding Billups in the 04' finals it was a nightmare to watch.
