Anyone here own one? I'm looking for one that I can carry around with me so it needs to be USB powered as well instead of having an AC adapter. Also needs to be at least a terabyte

I'm looking at this one from Western Digital
link

Anyone own that one or a different one that they would recommend?

Would like to know as well. On the market for one (Mac compatible)

My big external hard drives are WD and never had a problem with them. My portable HD is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex and I use it for downloading movies and playing directly to my media player, works perfectly fine. I don't think you can go wrong with either WD or SeaGate.

I have an 250 GB WD external HD. I've had it for 3 years and have never had a problem with it.

Stupid question, with those HDD that don't have an AC power to it, why can't I open it on my PS3?

I have both an AC powered one and a similar one OP posted above and the one that's AC powered and that works fine on the PS3, but the smaller one with no AC power doesn't get recognized.

Got one at home it. It's 1TB, but the port connecting to the drive is broken. Any tips on how to fix it. I have the receipt somewhere and I'm pretty sure I bought the insurance, but I can't find it. Would they have that information at the place of purchase. I bought it Black Friday last year.

It's the file system. I believe most HDDs use NTFS file system while the PS3 can only read FAT/FAT32. You'd have to convert it but it limits the file information accessed at a time, this was the main reason I stopped using the PS3 as my media player, it's just too picky.

If I remember correctly the 360 doesn't like NTFS external drives either, but it can read HFS+ formatted drives which was a big plus for me since I've been using macs for a long time now and all my externals are formatted for that.

As to the OP, if you're not going to be moving it around that much you're much better off rolling your own external using a case/controller from New Egg and supplying your own drive. You'll get a better value for your money and better hardware. If you're going to be moving the drives around a lot, my personal pick has been the Seagate Freeagent Go Flex for the past few drives I've picked up. they've held up through some serious abuse.

That seagate looks really nice. I wish there were more hybrid Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 drives.

i've heard usb 3 is the bomb. however, it's not well supported.

3.0 is supported way more than Thunderbolt. I think that's what you meant, because USB 3.0 is becoming the norm now. It's weird because Thunderbolt is way faster
