Facebook Out-of-area buying

Hey fam! I'm trying to buy a pair of kicks off a facebook group, but its out-of-area. Its too far to drive(I'm in New York, he's in Texas). Should I pay first(via paypal invoice)? Should he ship first? Should I just pass for now? Anything helps thanks fam!
