I really can't think of a group that could match their actual singing talent, and even quality of songs. Like these groups don't sing they be SANGING!.

thoughts?

Listening to Jodeci's Cry For You right now has me wanting to say yes on the Jodeci part.

I mean damn listen to this ##$%. The @#$&^%%$ emotion on this @#$%. K-Ci and them #$%^## was sanging indeed.

Plus a few of their other joints be having your boy in the zone like Mike in the Garden. Straight love making strokes and @#$%.

Yeah Jodeci got that @#%%.

Well as far as female groups go (in the 90's of course)... i'm having a hard time thinking of any that could REALLY !$## with SWV.
As far as male groups go... that's a tough one.

This is all subjective.

For R&B male group, I will get back to you on that one.

But female R&B group, if I had to pick the best singing, talent, and song catalogue wise, En Vogue takes it. Classics. Also each one in the group can sing lead and hold her own. They knew how to throw it down.

They had early 90s hits, but this classic of theirs, released in the late 90s, is my fave.

Oh %!%%... how could I forget En Vogue?

En Vogue definitely takes the crown.

Earth, Wind & Fire/The Isley Brother's >>>>>> *

Jodeci is up there tho (and New Edition after them). They put a hell of a dent in the game. R&B is still running off of their blueprint 20 years later.

Why must we do this?

Earth, Wind & Fire?
New Edition?
Boyz II Men have more #1's than ANYONE.

The Supremes?
En Vogue?

It's neither fact nor fiction. It's opinion.

Ok, just did some thinking and can provide an answer...For best singing R&B group, have to give it to Jodeci. Their vocals and range was crazy. But, my favorites are Boyz II Men,Dru Hill, and 112. I just listened a lot more to the latter groups growing up. I surely do love Jodeci songs, but they don't resonate wih me as much since I did not listen to them as much as the other groups.

And When it comes to the old school groups  EWF COULD NOT SEE JODECI IN TERMS OR RAW SANGING! Them Jodeci boys sound like a Gospel Choir dudes be SANGING. I believe their Rendition of Lately >>>>>>>>>>> Stevie Wonders, yea I said it.

Even when they first came out, that raw talent was just crazy

"Right Here" is ONE song dog.

SWV was dope but we're really pushing the definition of GREATNESS here.

How about you just say they're your favorite or appreciate them without feeling the need to proclaim them the greatest like you an AUTHORITY on all male/female R+B groups of ALL TIME?

goldenchild9 nailed it. Isley Brothers are probably also top of the stack.

If things like writing, playing istruments etc. mean anything to you in your definition of greatness.

I'm laughing at you talking about singing like Philip Bailey's range doesn't crush that whole group.

you guys are forgetting about 112 as well: boyz II men tied with 112, then fill in the rest of your list...

SWV...En Vogue sweeps them vocally. En Vogue also has a better catalogue of discography.

I know these guys would not be named as anywhere close to the obvious ones for best male R&B group, but have to give up for Teddy Riley and his crew, also for his the new jack swing they brought into RnB. In the late mid to late 90s they became more mainstream outside rhytmic/urban music stations and had legit bangers.

My !*$@. Always will be a banger.

I actually sing this at the top of my lungs everytime I hear it.

The Entire "It's About Time" album alone is better than any album a female group dropped in the 21 year span of 1990 to 2011. And I`m really basing this off of singing ability, because the groups of the 1970s were maybe more talented in regard to actually making music, but The Combo of KCi and Jo Jo singing lead and Devante Swings brains I cant think of anyone seeing them. Heck Devante Swing fathered the VA movement Timbo and all them had. So in terms of talent Jodeci had one of the most talented RnB figures ever in Devante. (Idk if Id put him over Teddy Riley, but it is a good argument.

I dunno. Maybe cause it was Middle and then high school when they were huge...pause. But Boyz II Men and Dru Hill are my all time male favs.

Dru Hill came from Jodecis sack though.

And I prefer Guy Teddy Riley over Blackstreet Teddy Riley. Teddys Jam 2 might be one of the livest songs ever.

I respect Boys 2 Men, but I was never a true fan, The Passion you hear in Jodeci songs are in sane, like dudes prob be in the booth sweating and stuff.
One group dudes sleep on hard is Gap Band, Charlie Wilson fathered R Kelly and Aaron hall.

HELL no we didn't forget that!Keep in mind that for the majority of SWV's reign Coko did A LOT of vocal work on those records because she just had an ill voice (that's not to take anything away from Taj and Lelee though). All the ladies of En Vogue could tear it down (as Hazel mentioned).

112 was Jodeci also. Remember Diddy discovered both groups so when he started Bad Boy he basically made Jodeci 2.0. Even that dude will tell you that 112 aint messing with them Queen City boys.

Boyz II Men made GREAT music but they were just an updated Philly Soul/a cappella sound perfectly packaged and produced by Babface/Jimmy Jam/Motown. What they did has been done before and after them, they just had the perfect storm of factors that propelled them to music immortality like Mariah Carey.
But Jodeci broke the mold and recreated it. making a sound and image purely theirs that everyone from Jagged Edge to Chris Brown/Jeremih is still trying to recreate today. They freestyled pure emotion like Bobby Womack, had the complete vocal range and brought the Hip-Hop/bad boy image to R&B.

There's nothing else quite like this...
