Agreed with you, looks like they start off on a steep hill though so there's only seconds to let go before you've already gained some major 'altitude'. I think natural instinct is to hold on for dear life though.
Pilot did have a chance to veer to the right and land in that open field beside the houses. In his attempt to grab onto the passenger and steer the plane he took it over that 'forest' which would've spelled instant death to the passenger if he dropped.
Crazy video though. Man's really lucky to be alive.
