Self awareness is the concept everyone is dancing around. Which is basically the ability to check yourself. That father didn’t, he had an emotion and a reaction. Didn’t ask himself what kind of example he’s setting for his or how it makes him look as a man. Self awareness is universal, a good practice for men and women. Masculinity/femininity are just tools to stir the pot.

soft father ≠ bad example/father…emotionally charged/irrational fathers may or may not set bad examples for their chirren…further such behavior could be an example of how/what not to be & ironically serving a good example for those similar circumstances

absentee fathers, by definition, don’t directly or indirectly raise kids…

trying to ascribe the ‘softness’ to one side of the parental equation is an all to neat explanation….the truth is fathers of this sort have always existed & it was not necessarily some anathema/indictment of them as a father, at least not in the way you are assessing it

one can definitely have ‘self awareness’ and choose not to ‘check themselves’ and/or not care about how their behavior is perceived then there is fact that cognitive dissonance can be a very useful kind of dissociation, not mention these things can be very contextual, man could be mild mannered about everything other than his family

not sure i’d agree that femininity/masculinity are just tools but essentially they can be distilled to a kind of boundary/expectation/polarity/role division…if there is ‘struggle’ that folk are dancing around i think it’s that there seem to be more ‘fluidity’ & less expectation/strictures, which in many aspects was needed but the negative consequence/externality is actually that there is less expectation & folk aren’t as keen to adhere/follow/enforce norms.

relatedly, the almost oxymoronic conjunction/combination of fragmentation & globalization in terms of culture plays a part too in these tings (creation & following of norms, expectations, roles, etc.)…i’ll step off the thread derailing proverbial podium now
