You do get a car rental while they are fixing your car free of charge. My girl just took her crappy colbalt to the dealer and they said there are 100 cars in front of hers, so she will have a rental for about 3 months.
Honestly GM should be giving out free cars at this point her colbalt has about 8 different recalls.
Edit: If you are weak or say you have other means of transportation they will get over on you and not give you a rental.
