Hank Steinbrenner - "Football has a bigger steroid problem than baseball"

Great...now we know what we can look forward to on Sportscenter and OTL later today. Can't wait.

Any MLB player gets ACCUSED of using anything and he's automatically looked at as a horrible cheating piece of $$$#. It doesn't matter if he fails a drug test or not...his name just has to me MENTIONED and everyone gets all bent out of shape.

But in football you have a guy like Shawne Merriman who actually FAILS a drug test then is the defensive player of the year, and gets in the pro bowl and nobody even remembers the fact that he's roided up. It's a huge double standard.

There is a big difference between the usage of steroids in football and baseball.

Baseball is a sport where its ALL about the individual stats, and the steroid usage has been widespread to increase home run numbers, word to Bary Bonds, Sosa,McGuire, etc.

In Football, it'll make you stronger obviously, but its not a sport where its all based on individual statistics (as a defensive player all you can do ispretty much get sacks; if your on the front line, INT, or tackles).

But regardless you give yourself an edge (especially in the recovery phase), but its obvious why most people care about the usage in a sport like BASEBALL asopposed to FOOTBALL. I'm only trying to give an explanation as to why the public is not AS HARD on football players as baseball players.

PS: Why is Hank crying like a B, b/c his team had a large amount of users and wants to distract attention from his team? Whatever dude.

He didn't win that.

Jason Taylor did.

You're thinking defensive rookie of the year, which he won the year before.

Yeah, but you have guys like Jason Taylor and Champ Bailey who weren't candid in their comments towards Merriman and him "potentially" gettingDPOY (which he didn't). You all may think it's an issue what won't be remembered, but fact of the matter is, it's something that will followthese guys for the remainder of their careers. If they have a down year, what are people going to suspect? If they have an INCREDIBLE year, what are peoplegoing to suspect. It's either they are on roids and tearing up the stat sheet, or they have gone off their cycle and are having a down year. Obviouslythere are going to be guys in the NFL who use PED's. However, it just isn't the same issue as what the MLB is currently going through. There is nosenator compiling a 1000+ page report on HGH and what have you. People have an interest the taping of games to gain a competitive advantage. Every sport itseems has gone through it's share of controversey. Roids/HGH in the NFL just isn't the hot topic...

NBA: Refs...
NFL: Taping of games...
NHL: Gambling ring
MLB: Roids

Ol' Hank should worry about most of his "marquee" players over the past 10 years being named in the Mitchell Report....and how Posada wasn'tnamed is beyond me....Yankees*

because they don't test for HGH. (i think.)
There is no test for HGH that is reliable so it is a moot point anyway.

And why do people always think you have to be big and ripped to use steroids?

I am not saying NBA players use or dont use but to make that statement based off the fact they are skinny is foolish.

And why do people always think you have to be big and ripped to use steroids?

because they missed the last 3 decades of cyclists and track and field athletes testing positive for PEDSs

Like the congresswoman last week who had the 4 picturesof Clemens done up to show there's no way he could have been using PEDs?

We gotta face it, most people are ignorant when it comes to this stuff. They hear "steroids" and lump everything together and assume that if hedoesnt like like Hulk Hogan he probably doesnt use. Or if he's a marginal player he probably doesnt use. It's comical. Especially with congressmen.

This is just ONE example of what steroids can do for you

nobody remembers? i'm pretty sure everybody who pays attention to sports knows he was on roids.

or are you just mad that he doesn't have to go to a congressional hearing about it and baseball players do? because that's not gonna happen in the NFL.the league hands out punishment and then is done with it. they actually handle their business like they're supposed to.

13 years is a long time man. You're going from a boy to agrown damn man, pretty much.
no regular food diet or strength training can make you look like that.

so you think everybody who has big muscles, and a sixpack...IN THE ENTIRE WORLD is on roids? Just cause you don't hit the gym doesn't mean others don't.

The NFL is good cause they've banned roids for a while now
laugh.gif
theauthor of the article is trying to be the first dude to say "i told you so" if the NFL ever has a steroid period like baseball is having now. Problemis, that's never going to happen

Here's my take on it...
Hank Steinbrenner said:
"I don't like baseball being singled out," the New York Yankees senior vice president said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Monday night.

This is a valid point. The media is to blame though. They are the reason why we hear about this news CONSTANTLY when it's about MLB, but whenit's the NFL, it's reported, but it isn't made into a big deal when it's essentially the same thing. One takes a PED to enhance their alreadyGod-given talent or they take it to speed up recovery time.

I don't agree with Hank when he assumes that the problem in football is "at least twice as many" then goes and assumes because he of the"speed and size of those players". Also when he says "But the fact is it's been in football a long time and it's been in basketball,I'm sure" he loses a little credibility with that statement.

But Hank Steinbrenner does have a point.

That doesn't mean the NFL should ignore the problem. IMO, they are. Yeah MLB is testing for HGH only because the public eye is constantly onthem, but they're actually doing something about HGH.

That's the thing though. You'd have to be a person that actually pays attention to sports to know that he was on roids. While in baseball, everyone, whether it be a real sports fan or just the casual fan, KNOWS the names Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, etc.

The league hands out the punishment and is done with it, right? Tell that to Arlen Specter.

Man, Hank reminds me of that annoying person who gets a job because their dad is a big rig...

Like this girl at work... didnt have a job, and her father got her a management level position, when shes got a total of 23453 tattoos, 123498324 peircings, and an overall bad egg.
