Summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts, sending plume of ash and smoke 30,000 feet high

An eruption from the Kilauea volcano's summit shot ash and smoke into the air early Thursday on Hawaii's Big Island, and the resulting plume is expected to cover the surrounding area, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The volcanic cloud reached 30,000 feet, the US Geological Survey said. That's a little below the cruising altitude of a jetliner.

My boy out there. He works a cpl miles from it and said its bad but they making them continue to work :smh:

it’s been pretty heavy there over the past week or so. earthquakes. a bunch of houses in a small subdivision were consumed by the lava flow. ash in the air.

i heard on the radio that the big island mayor said there were a bunch of vacation cancellations but that also new bookings being made because people want to come and see the spectacle. i’m sure there are ways to get around the roadblocks and hike to the flows. seen a bunch of videos of people really close to the lava.

Hmmm... heading to Oahu in a few weeks with the fam. Hope the wind is blowing the opposite way!

Oahu isn't affected aside from the volcanic fog (vog) causing the air to suck. Trade winds and rain clear it up most of the time. The Big Island is pretty far from Oahu

Yeah, it's the vog I'm talking about. My son tends to be sensitive to it and it has caused him problems on other trips to Hawaii when the air quality was bad.

the other night here on oahu, the vog was pretty bad. my 5 year old even remarked how it was harder to breathe. hasn't been too bad lately though.

Damn, that's exactly what I'm worried about. It will cause my son all kinds of trouble. Guess we'll just hope for the best. Thanks for the replies, fellas!
