This is false. I've lived in Japan, China, and Taiwan. The reason they wore those facemasks in the past was as to prevent other people from catching their cold/sickness in schools, work etc. In western cultures, children just stay home from school, but this is not the case in Asian countries where education is highly prized. The facemarks have been ingrained in their culture by now so wearing the masks is not foreign to them since this outbreak. The reason most people think this way is the news coverage during the SARS scare.
