House cleaners dispose of evicted suicide victim's body, thinking it's a 'mannequin'
It turns out that the crew hired to clean a Tampa, Florida, area house was a bit too thorough. According to the Hernando County sheriff's office, the cleaners trashed a suicide victim's hanging body, thinking it was a mannequin, the Tampa Tribune reported.
Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis told the newspaper that the workers found the so-called mannequin hanging in a garage on Thursday morning and took it with of a pile of debris in the back of a pickup truck to the dump.
Even employees of the local trash transfer station questioned the workers about the human figure, but again the cleaners insisted it was a mannequin, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Apparently, the transfer station employees weren't buying it, however. They called police, who arrived to find the "somewhat mummified" remains of Jeremy Witsoth, 33, inside a bin at the landfill.
What the sheriff called the "unusual death investigation" concluded when it was determined that Witsoth took his own life.
Authorities found a suicide note scrawled on the wall at the home, from which Witsoth had been evicted following the breakup of his family.
Authorities believe Witsoth hanged himself in the garage and had been dead for several weeks but not more than a 1 1⁄2 months, the newspaper reported.
The house was "like something you would see on (the TV show) 'Hoarders'" with dead rodents and trash everywhere, the sheriff told the Tribune.
Deputies are still investigating, but no charges had been filed.
