itunes speaking

my music is all over the place different genre and sub genres, artists names mixed with their nicknames, play lists basically are just made up of whatever the last CD i burnt was.

i have lots of tracks with interlude. skits, phone conversations from albums or mix tapes that i always skip while playing itunes on shuffle. as well as tracks that are on albums i don't particularly care for.

my question is how do you organize your itunes/play lists

do you delete the songs on albums you don't like?

do you delete all the skits, interludes you don't like?

do you only have songs/play-lists that you listen to?

what are you playlists like?

i want to start organizing it, i just don't know where to start.

I've kept my pre iTunes sorting going on, spread out over several hard drives I've got music by Artist then Album folder most of it has the album art included in the folders and some even have complete scans of liner notes. Some day I need to get everything set up on an always on server so I can have full access to all of my music at once. As far as playlists go, I don't really do that too often, unless I'm planning for something, I used to do meticulous playlists when I deejayed a radio show on WTUL, but now I kind of just listen to new music and old music all the way through, so I don't tend to get rid of any songs from an album even if I don't like them. For car trips hitting shuffle all on the iPod works really well.

edit: I should mention that I'm a stickler for proper id3 tagging. If you've got everything properly tagged you can basically store it anywhere and not really lose track of things.

I've organized mine by artist, album, and genre. Back in 06, I got tired of the mess and just decided to run through and do everything. Took 5+ hours. It was totally worth it though and now when I do it for new stuff that I get it takes less than a minute. Its made using my ipod and itunes much easier. Almost everything has album art too.

i organize mine by album and i keep all of my music wack or not

I like to sort mine by artists and I make sure that for every song by that artist the name is the same so when you click on that artist ALL of their songs pop up instead of scattered ones.

For example, a song by Kanye West (say Blame Game) would be sorted like this:

Song: Blame Game (feat. John Legend)
Artist: Kanye West

Instead of:

Song: Blame Game
Artist: Kanye West feat. John Legend

I think the best way to attack an unorganized iTunes is to first do what I did above. Then from each artist you can pick out songs you don't like, etc. What I also like to do is throw all of the songs I like into a playlist and just run that through so I don't have to deal with skits and what not.

Also, if you have time on your hands, go to the Wikipedia pages for a specific album and get the year of the album and the tracklisting and stuff it makes it look a lot nicer. Example:

If you're not doing this then youre doing it wrong.

I'd say you need to work on your genre organization.

As far as songs, I put the featured artist in the title as such:

Albums are organized as such:

Genres:

Playlists:

How I organize albums with more than one artist: Group name as "Album Artist". Artist I put the artist's who's song it is as the regular artist.

If you only knew. My iTunes is 94% rap music(done the math) theres really nothing to organize, I just put all the rap under rap/hip-hop and the rest was easy to do. I dont see the need to dive much deeper into it.

I have to keep everything organized... The features are in the track (That's pretty much a given, if you have it next to the main artist it becomes a complete mess), I've got all artwork (even for loose tracks), track numbers, dates, etc. I even ID my favorite producers on the tracks as well (under composer) so if I search The Neptunes for example, all their work will come up.

As far as deleting tracks... If I don't like a track or skit or whatever, I'll go back & delete it. There's a bunch of skits I'll keep, but if I have something on an album that im not feelin, I won't keep it just to have it.

album would be the best way.. i aint tryna have my playlist all around like missing puzzles gotta be in order like the soda machine

I have everything organized by Albums. I do the exact same thing Certified said. I add all my features to the song title.

With groups that release compilation albums, I add every artist to the artist name. So if I have a Jet Life album, I'll enter the artist name as:

Jet Life (Curren$y, Young Roddy, TradeMark, Smoke DZA)

For songs that are not on albums or mixtapes, how do you label those?

I do the same thing... All my compilation albums are sorted like this.

As for random songs, I'll list them all under "Misc." for that artist. I do this for most artists unless I have enough random tracks to sort into another category. Like with Nas, I can list unreleased, freestyles, remixes, etc.
