How to Avoid Mainstream Rap

What blogs are you reading, who's new flow are you digging today, where do you go to find something outside of the norms of mainstream music. Since I've joined this forum I see that people really can't stand something that sounds fabricated but more times than none they fail to give an example of who we should be listening too.

I can't tell if yall think rap has died already or yall are hiding some magical new artist that I dont know about.

Please, show me some magical new artist. 

Im really feeling this dude Jay Prince (from london) right now. Yall should check it out. If I wasnt deep into the soulection movement I wouldve never found this guy.

Start by not falling into the backpack trap.

i.e. on a quest for original sounding music, you become so blindly anti-mainstream, you become a sheep no different than those who blindly follow mainstream rap, except you only happen to be on the opposite end of the spectrum. 

If you can avoid that, figure out what YOU actually like. For an example it took me decades to realize that I do like catchy ****. I love melody and harmony. I also love large sounding and layered production. This current period of rap the last few years of Future, Kevin Gates, Rich Homie Quan, Young Thug, have to shout to Max B going back even further, etc is almost tailor made for my ears. Going back almost ten years with what Atlanta been doing and the rise of the trap sub genre in general, again almost tailor made for my ears.  

Can't nobody tell you what you should be listening to bruh. As for outlets and where to find new music, idk really I've never really had a problem finding the artist that suit me don't really know why. The one thing I do is keep up with who my favorite producers are working with.

I agree with everything posted

I am a cancer so i can be very moody and the music i listen to reflects that.

I like trap rap for when im working on projects it keeps me moving forward.
I like R&B stuff for when im chilling in the crib or cruising in the car.
Then boss talk rap when im working out so like some ross or jay etc.

If you like mainstream stuff nothing is wrong with that it serves its purpose.

In terms of finding new music i like to see who artist are working with and look into their music.

If you're intentionally trying to find a different lane of music then you're already limiting yourself. I try to listen to everything I can, then filter out whatever I'm not vibing to. A lot of people never even give the music a chance and already have preconceived notions about an artist or track. don't limit yourself to a genre or subgenre. It's always good to go back and listen to the older stuff too. Spotify is a good place to start, ain't nothing wrong with "mainstream" either
