This is an urban legend and a myth.

Earliest known "French Toast" recipes come from a collection of old Latin recipes in earlier centuries (4th or 5th) which eventually migrated to other parts of Europe, mainly parts of France, where they called it "pain perdu", which means "lost bread" or "waste bread". It was called this because it was traditionally made with stale or spare baguettes from the night before. They also soaked it in milk, not eggs. That came later. :D


Speaking of "French" Cuisine, French Fries are not French, which is sort of obvious. Only Americans and Canadians call them French Fries. It is an old English term, in which something is typically deep fried in oil. Thomas Jefferson referred to the fries as "Potatoes fried in a French fashion", which parts of Europe called them frites and chips.
