The term break a leg comes from Shakespearean era. Good theater performances brought loud cheering crowds. They would jump in their chairs and slam them on the ground to create the most noise.

Sometimes things got so obnoxious that chairs would break. It wasn’t a good show unless a few chair legs got broken. Hence, in showbiz, we now have “break a leg”
 
The term think outside the box comes from this brain teaser: connect all nine dots with four lines.
