I want to start mixing. What do I need?

I want to start mixing music just as a hobby. What software/apps etc would you recommend? 

I listen to so much music and I think about how I'd remix songs almost every other song I hear. I want to give it a try. I do not have any experience I just want to try and see what I come up with. 

Being unemployed is making me go crazy. I need to do something constructive when I am not looking for jobs. 

Any advise, suggestions will be appreciated.
