Sitting around with five of my buddies.  All of us have college degrees and only one of us are using in the field we studied in.  Got me to start thinking... is this common?

MY ALUMNI... MESA STATE COLLEGE, COLORADO
DEGREE: B.A PSYCHOLOGY
OCCUPATION: MIDDLE SCHOOL HISTORY TEACHER

***not what I went to school for but it does require a BA/MA

Yes and no.

Some of the most successful people I've ever met never stepped foot on a college campus, while some others I've met got their degree and are ballin' as well.

Safest way is probably through college, though.

Let me also add that my goal is to get my phd

If I get it at uva it will be in systems and sensory neuroscience or if I get it at vcu then it'll be in biopsychology

Its hard explainin that to my family cuz its always listed as different things. And they think psychology is only dr. Phil type stuff

If I could do it again I would majored in biology cuz that's the type of psych I'm good at

I chose psych cuz if the biopsych stuff fell thru then I could still use the psych degree in another field

this question is so tiring to answer all the time, but oh well. Yes, this is common.

Best answer: Yes/No, college is / isn't worth it. It depends on the person you are and whether you are willing to put in the work or not. Sometimes you will go into the field you study in, other times you won't. I could give accounts of everyone I know who actually entered the field of their college major and I would be able to give at least 20 people who didn't.

Few examples off the top of my head:
-One of my good friends' dad never went to college, yet he now owns his own company, a $600,000 home, and gets paid in the 6 figure range. He definitely put in a ton of work.

-My dad got a BA in economics at a prestigious Japanese college, now works for a small up-and-coming tech company as an investment advisor, gets paid pretty well. Had a good future at Bank of Tokyo but opted to move to the US instead.

-Dad's friend has a BSChe, ended up becoming a patent lawyer.

A misconception people make about college is that you have to enter the field you get a degree in. It helps, but by no means should it be the final say of what you want to do.

You want a quick answer, then yes, college is worth it. I gave that example of that guy who didn't get a college degree. This was maybe 30 years ago when not having a college degree was okay as long as you could put in the work. Nowadays in today's workforce, if you don't have a college degree, tough luck.

If you have a college degree, by no means should you short your career options if you aren't happy with what you have just because you majored in English or Music. No disrespect to those majors btw.

B.S. in Molecular Biology at UA.

I hope to get my masters and work for the FDA, become an immunologist, industrial chemist, biotechnology, maybe even med school. These are all jobs that I couldn't even dream of without a college degree. It all depends how hard your willing to work while in college.

If I had a do over I would have chosen materials engineering but the math kept me away
