portland from what ive heard has very little corporations and has a lot of locally owned
places , they seem more self dependent than most large cities

I'm from Texas and I lived in NW Portland for several years when I worked for NIKE. It reminded me a lot of Austin - laid back, creative culture and great geography. Between my bike, the light rail, and streetcars I never needed to own a car there. To me the weather seemed like six months of perfect (APR - SEP) and six months of drizzling rain (OCT - MAR). The downtown park blocks were great except for:
- Protests EVERY WEEKEND by ignorant, bored, crusty hippies who could never explain to me what they were protesting or why they were wearing/using products manufactured by the corporation they were so angry at that week.
- Healthy (stoned) young white males with dreadlocks on every corner begging me for a dollar while I'm on my way to WORK. I'll never forget: one jackass had a sign that said "Too lazy to work, too honest to steal" as if that were somehow noble.
- Those ridiculous beggars that spraypainted themselves all one color and stood still like "statues". People were throwing money at them as fast as they could.
But if I could relocate back to Portland, I would do it in a heartbeat. Friendly people and low-key lifestyle.

One of my friends has interned with Nike for two years and moved to Portland because he got hired with Nike told me there is a strong lack of black people in Portland. Mostly just indie, hipsters, hippies, and grungy people there. But said it is so chill. I was told that most young professional black people leave Portland in a year or two to go back to more urban cities such as Chicago.
I would love to visit sometime though. I have heard many pleasant things about Portland.

Wrong. No sales tax but they tax the hell out of you everywhere else. Our state government has no idea how to spend money either. And the women are getting uglier and fatter just like many other places in the US.

For those of you who have lived in Portland, but moved there from larger cities; how is the diversity? It appears from the replies in here the black community isn't represented in large numbers. What about other ethnicity's, such as Asian & Latino?

I would say there is a fairly large number of Asians in Portland. Not quite as much as say Seattle but they are definitely well represented. Latino, well not so much in downtown Portland but in outlying towns and to the south I would say there are a good amount. As far as the black community I would say it is definitely lacking in Portland but there are places where you are more likely to find more African Americans such as NE Portland.
As far as the dude asking about the rain it really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Sure it is cloudy in the winter but it isn't like it is raining all the time. You could have clouds and rain and the weather can change to sunny in about 10 minutes. And the rain for the most part isn't a heavy rain like you would get from thunderstorms or something, it is just mellow. Plus it rarely snows as well except for the mountains. Portland stays pretty mild weather wise. Summers are nice, normally get about 3 months of nothing but sun and weather in the 70-80's.

Nah man but my Dad grew up there. I grew up in Tennessee and since they didn't have a football team at the time I followed the Lions. Moved around the time when the Titans moved in, still have a few pennants and stuff that say Tennessee Oilers from before they changed the name and have a bunch of signed stuff including things from Steve Mcnair and Eddie George.
