2014:
Donald Sterling – Possibly the worst owner (and landlord) in sports history was finally given the boot by the National Basketball Association in April after Sterling was taped spewing his racist garbage to one of his mistresses. Sterling was banned from the NBA and forced to sell the Clippers in one of the quickest exit jobs in history – made possible by the players, sponsors and fans who rallied together and demanded change. Donald quite possibly may have this award permanently named after him before all is said and done and had this year 100% wrapped up, until:
Ray Rice – February 15th was a night Ray Rice and the NFL will forever wish they could get back. Video surfaced of Rice dragging his fiance’s body out of a casino elevator after he (and her) were arrested for assault. Since that time the entire league and commissioner have been taken to task on how they handle discipline, who really knows what, and how PR is handled. Rice later had the elevator video leaked and saw his contract terminated and an indefinite suspension from the league. Serious points have been added when merely the statement of your full name instantly causes the public to think of beating women.
Roger Goodell - A tough year for the nation's most powerful commissioner who now seems to be a walking punchline. The entire Ray Rice situation led to the nation calling for his head and Roger himself having to hide. The angry media turned on him and so may the owners when all is said and done. He is currently awaiting the results of his "investigation" that will show what his office did or did not know about RIce. It will be good entertainment listening to the NFL Draft crowd response next year when he walks on stage.
Adrian Peterson – Was indicted in September by a grand jury in Texas for reckless injury to his child and accused of beating his son with a tree branch. The Vikings deactivated Adrian and A.P. as of this writing has not played since and likely will not until next season. A sad story all around.
The NCAA – 2014 was a year like no other for this institution and 2015 may bring even more change. Scandals, court cases, lawsuits, cover ups, leaks, and more court cases have eroded the NCAA to the point where it finally is starting to acknowledge (just a little bit) that the amateur system worked better in 1944 than it does in 2014.
Jose Canseco – Accidentally shot off his finger. Claimed it fell off again playing poker and he was going to sell it on ebay. Now this week had his fiancé leave him as she claims he threatened to kill her and her family multiple times.
Hope Solo – The committee has already made known how entertaining Solo’s previous work was – and how could they not when she married a troubled ex-football player a day after he was arrested for an altercation with her. However yet again Solo is in the news when in June she was arrested and charged with assault on two of her family members and currently awaits trial.
Dan Snyder – The ******** owner continued his attempts to steamroll anyone in his path. The results on the field (12 non-winning seasons in 16 years) pale in comparison to the results of his small-penis syndrome, where years of “I do anything I want because I can” mentality have reached an all-time high. Snyder’s entire 2014 has been one massive PR hit with his team’s name and ways of justifying it. Bonus points for buying off or bullying any media that does not agree. Meanwhile, his franchise quarterback and face of his team just got benched and may not suit up for the team anymore after this season.
