Jim Rome vs David Stern - rome beats his wife and the nba lottery was fixed

The subject isn’t out of bounds, but the approach wasanatagonistic and accusatory. There are better ways to bring it up. Instead ofa personal attack (which is what the question was), phrase it as such: “what isyour reaction to the notion that people feel the lottery is rigged?

how is he risking anything if he's in charge? who's going to do anything?

You see he swept that Tim Donaghy $%+# under the rug and nobody batted an eyelash dude can do whatever he wants and does.

dudes really think the lottery is on the up and up?

thats why cleveland got Bron and Kyrie right?

hes basically the CEO, so he still has to answer to the league owners. If he brings a bad image to their product, they can fire him. Having a scnadal of fixing the nba draft is a bad look all the way around. The Donaghy thing is different because that was essentially an employee acting on his own. Its worse if the "boss" partakes in cheating
Also as for the cleveland draft in 11. The timberwolves were 1 and the cavs were 2.  The cavs wouldve gotten derrick williams or Irving. Seeing as how the Timberwolves already had rubio at PG itd be dumb to take Irving. They very well might have taken him or traded him, but you have 2 extremely bad teams, only a 2 game difference apart.

i mean... what was stern to say? "yeah its fixed"????

plus stern is on his way out. he has very few dambs left to give out

If he's fixing it to help them why would they fire him? How is it a scandal if they keep the actual drawing a "secret process" nobody can ever prove @%$!

You seriously believe Donaghy was a lone wolf?

You think Stern has never had a hand in the outcome of a game?

So wait, are people just mad that it was Jim Rome who asked the question, or do those same people have a problem with the question being asked PERIOD. It's a legitimate question IMO, there just been 1 too many coincidences involving the league owned hornets for it not to be put into question.

This is twofold IMO, Jim's actual question followed by the actual topic at hand.

Jim's question -- It's sports radio (take it with a grain of salt obviously) and Jim and Jim but in this case naw it's not really a legitimate question. It's trolling and that's what makes sports radio I guess. Rome knows what Stern's response is going to be to "rigged" questions. He won't admit to it and thinks it's pointless to talk about. It's old news. So, be prepared with better questions that will actually give us Stern's opinions on better legit topics (Rome and his staff could probably come up with 200). You have the commissioner of a league on. Not Roger Lodge.

Actual topic at hand -- The media sat on this storyline the week of the draft. They knew if the Bobcats won then "Stern giving one to MJ"  if the Nets won it's "Stern givin one to Jay Z and new team what a shock"  if the Hornets won it's "the league owns the Hornets what a shock"  if the Cavs won it's "still feeling sorry for Cleveland" and so on. The media teenagers are still running with "DRAFT WAS RIGGED" weeks later because it sells. It's not legitimate but if it sells go with it because America can't think for themselves.

Again this is overthinking just one question obviously. Rome knows what he's doing and so do his producers. As others have said Rome has always done his thing his way....but he has also joined the club recently (he has no choice) and what that consists of is your work and legitimacy take a back seat to how many Twitter mentions you get. It's all about Twitter and everything else be damned.

Second time photoshopping, but hope yall enjoy.

they would fire him because each owner is in it for their own team also. Do you think an owner would be ok with Lebron going to 1 team over theres if there is a fix?

And dudes keep saying "He's like a CEO it would look bad on his company" how many ceo's out here doing any and everything corrupt they can to keep their business at the top dudes need to stop living in candyland

everything was actually ok up to the point where D Stern said that Rome did things for "cheap thrills" and saying "you've been successful of making a career out of it".

Although spurred by a question that Stern didnt like, that response wasnt about the draft question anymore.

Im pretty sure both would re-do this if they could

It's not a "tough question" from Rome, nor is it smart.
If you're one of the conspiracy theorists who believes the lottery is fixed, then you believe that Ernst & Young, one of the largest professional service firms in the world, has committed fraud on 29 NBA team owners who are billionaires. Why would they risk everything they're worth, their CPA license & reputations, all to get Anthony Davis to New Orleans?

If you say money, the NBA couldn't pay Ernst & Young enough money to fix the lottery.

The whole "lottery was fixed" theory shouldn't make it off of internet message boards--let alone be coming out of the mouth of a "professional" journalist while interviewing the commissioner of the league.

Yeah but look at it this way.

Stern takes pride in the image and perception of his precious NBA. It's been his career for the past 3 decades almost.

Rome comes out and straight up questions the integrity of it. Stern probably didnt appreciate that.

So Stern comes back and questions Rome's career just as he did to him and Rome gets offended. It was never personal or unprofessional.

So like i said, Rome got owned.

Stern is wickkkkkedd condescending when he gets a tough question and he turns vicious. Pretty bad move right there.

Until the NBA shows the actual lottery, everyone has reasons to question how New Orleans got that pick.

but as Stern said, if Brooklyn or charlotte wouldve won people would be saying the same thing.

Why?

Because its easy to create conspiracies. The Nets are moving to a new city. They need a "star", since Williams will likely leave. It would be great marketing wise if Jay Z had a great bball team. It could be Stern and the league trying to appease Jordan because they are "friends" if the Bobcats got the pick. If a bigger market team got the pick over a smaller market, it turn into favoritism. Its easy to grasp at straws

I mean, that would seem a lot less likely to cause conspiracy theories then a team owned by the nba. Not even close.

At the end of the day, David Stern loss.

The media thinks that the NBA is rigged. Too late to fix.

That's the thing - It really doesn't matter what the media thinks & I'm sure David Stern doesn't care one bit about what they think.
I dislike Stern as much as the next man & I actually wouldn't be surprised if the lottery has always been rigged but unless someone has solid proof that it is, all this means nothing. It's all just speculation.

What did Jim Rome expect Stern to say? "Yes, its been rigged since the beginning". Of course dude is going to be defensive/abrupt, especially if these allegations really aren't true.

The actual lottery has been held in a secured location for years & observed by sports journalists/media types who are not allowed to have any communication devices in the room. In fact, once the room is locked down, no one is allowed to leave even if they have to go to the bathroom.

As far as the Stern/rome story,  I couldn't stop laughing as I read the transcript. Stern is the smartest Commissioner of any of the pro leagues. rome is a hack anyway, I can't believe that people listen to him....Kudos to Stern. Dude's a boss.

Rome was probably on to something, and just hit a deep nerve within Stern for him to react so unprofessionally and personal. Had this been an NBA star, he would've been fined/and or suspended...

Totally intolerable behavior for an NBA commissioner of his tenure.

Exactly. Dude said that Rome asks the "tough questions". What's tough about asking the commissioner on a nationally syndicated radio show if he rigged his draft? What is he supposed to say?

Stern was really unprofessional, though. The "do you still beat your wife" comment wasn't meant to be taken literally either.

Wrong. Finals ratings are going to be sky high. Game 7 ratings were the best ever. Rome and Stern both won. People who don't listen to Rome's radio show are talking about the guy all day today.
