I feel like with each passing year the dunk contest participants become more obscure. Two of the guys this year barely even got drafted late in the 2nd round. And 1 of them was undrafted and in the G league up until last week. I mean no disrespect to any of these guys because they’re more athletic than I’ll ever be, but they really gotta find some more recognizable faces if they want people to tune in. Otherwise they should just scrap it altogether

I kind of agree but at the same time, it's the nature of fandom these days that led us here. I'm fine with some lesser name guys getting some shine, maybe sponsorship deals or more playing time, or just general name recognition off their ability to get up.

The main guys - Tatum, Ja, Zach, Fox and so on are held to a higher standard by fans. They're expected to lead their teams to playoff wins. Back in the day - and I watched the '88 dunk contest live, it's part of what got me hooked on being able to dunk - you just liked your favorite player regardless. It wasn't about championships only. That was a great thing to achieve, but you could be like Barkley and be considered great and completely 100% a legend and hall of fame player, without a chip.

But now you can be an incredible player and have some fan pull some advanced stat out of their *** and try to act like you're nothing. Like "I know you just scored 20 points in a row against the greatest athletes in the world and led your team to a comeback win but you come off the bench and look at your plus/minus! And this is just a regular season game!" It's absurd.

But that's how we get to a place where it doesn't make sense for guys to go out there and expend a ton of energy trying to do windmills and reverses and come up with some insane dunk only for some dummy to make some crass meme out of it and try to make fun of you for whatever you did. The 3-point shoot out, even if you do poorly, can just be looked at as practice, or a good night or an off night, but there really isn't a downside. You're not going to get hurt and it's straightforward.

Anyway, I really hope these shock drop at the start of the festivities, but I doubt it.
