My love forNike kicks has coincided with my love of track and field which I have competed in since the age of eight. I grew up in an era when the worlds best track andfield athletes and my sporting heroes were endorsing Nike products. In my opinion the Nike marketing campaigns of the late 80's and early 90's were thegreatest ever seen and I remember being mesmerised by the Nike adverts as I would flick through the pages of track and field magazines. At the age of 11, Iacquired my first pair of AM's. I was blown away by the ultramarine 180's and successfully convinced my parents that I would run a whole lot faster ifthey were on my feet.
Competing intrack, I had a good excuse to get new runners and would eagerly anticipate the trip to the running shoe store to get a joint Christmas / birthday present of afresh pair of Nike's. Throughout the 90's I sported many AM's which would later become classics. After the 180's came a pair of 93's in theorange/purple CW, followed by the teal swoosh AM[sup]2[/sup]'s in 94. On a family holiday stateside in 95 I blew every penny I had on a pair of the neon95's to return home the envy of my friends. By 96 I'd managed to beat the life out of all of the above in addition to some OG huaraches and huarachelights…
I begancollecting properly in 03 when I stumbled upon the Atmos Safari AM1's online. This was the first time I became aware of the extensive reach of Nike / AMculture beyond the racks of the high street retailers. I promptly got a pair through ebay and have worn the life out of them ever since. My existing collectionpredominantly represents the Nike's I loved when growing up. Not seen too much original stuff that I like in recent years with the presto being the lastshoe to drop that I would rate in comparison to the earlier AM / runner releases…
Anyway here it is:
Where it all began: Podium finish in '91 with the 180's on my feet
Newspaper photo: In action almost 20 years later in 2009 (wearing Nike powercats)
