I think he said he wanted to bulk up more that season because he expected more contact in the paint + I think he wanted to be more like LeBron. After the season was over, he said the extra muscle took a toll on his body (knees) and preferred playing at a lower weight.

You're correct, the 03-04 season is when the Lakers had the super squad! And by then, Kobe was in legal troubles, he slimmed down.

he wasn't beasting that year. he was actually a lot slower and couldnt shoot as well.
