Last minute travel

Has anyone ever just up and went somewhere on a whim? I want to do this but never done it before. I'd be traveling alone too. I have some time off from work and have to burn it before the end of the year. I was thinking DR or maybe somewhere in Central America. Trying to keep everything (airfare and accommodations) under a G though.

Any suggestions for places and/or sites to find some good deals?
