LOCK IT UP - College Football - 2009 Season/2010 Off-Season

Jeff is an excellent prospect. Prolly the best blockin TE in '11 but he is very skilled. He doenst get to show out cus his HS coach runs a 80% run offense but him being on watch lists shows how talented he is

Favorte part of the Browneye spring game was when the announcers said that Devier Posey told them he did NOT have great hands. The the next two catchable balls he saw he flat out dropped. Then going over to Browneye Planet and reading his thread. Here is what I saw: Better than Julio and AJ because he had better stats LAST year than those 2. WILL have 1300 yards. WILL be a lock for the first round. 2nd best WR in that class. Ouch. Ca't say I agree with any of that.

Rob Quinn, our top DE ran a 4.38 forty at 290 lbs.

I don't believe it though. Gotta be hand timed and off by at least a tenth or so.

Yeah, I don't believe that %!#@ either

But Quinn probably runs around a 4.5-4.6 or so.

And is he really 290? Because he doesn't look it at all.

Here are two keys to get you ready for the 2011 NFL Draft class:

It will be loaded with good quarterbacks and you should spend a lot of time watching the North Carolina defense.

img13302177.jpg

Arkansas' Ryan Mallett's talent will make scouts pay attention.(Getty Images)
Yes, the Tar Heels.
On my list of the top 32 players heading into next year's draft, fiveare quarterbacks and four play defense at North Carolina.

The top player is quarterback Jake Locker from Washington. Most havehim as a consensus top player heading into next season, but he will bechallenged by a slew of good quarterbacks, including Ryan Mallett ofArkansas, Christian Ponder from Florida State and Andrew Luck ofStanford.

Two of the North Carolina defensive players, end Robert Quinn andtackle Marvin Austin, will be potential top-10 picks.

A year ago at this time, many, including myself, had Mississippiquarterback Jevan Snead as a possible top pick. He flopped so badly asa junior that he wasn't even drafted. By the way, for all you rippingme for putting him at the top, I know at least two teams that had himas a preseason top-10 selection last summer.

That shows how things can change. So just remember there's a long wayto go until next April. But this gives you a starting point for whatshould be a really good draft, especially with all the quarterbacks.

1. Jake Locker, QB, Washington: He would have been a top-five pick in this year's draft. He will probably be the first player taken next year.

2. Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU (Jr.):This silky smooth corner was the best cover player I saw last year. Hewas better than Joe Haden, who went seventh overall to Cleveland inthis year's draft. This kid is special.

3. Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina (Jr.):In a league starved for pass rushers, here's a big-time edge player. Heis 6-feet-5 and 260 pounds with explosive speed.

4. Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas (Jr.):He is a big, powerful kid with a strong arm. He is raw, but the toolsmake the scouts salivate. Playing another year in Bob Petrino's offensewill really help him.

5. Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State:He thought about coming out this year, but opted to stay in for 2011.With his size, power and speed, the scouts will love him.

6. Anthony Castanzo, T, Boston College:He started as a true freshman at right tackle, but moved to the leftside as a sophomore. He has added weight each year to his 6-7 frame, all while maintaining good athletic ability.

img13302195.jpg

Marvin Austin is one of four Tar Heels among the top 32 prospects for 2011.(Getty Images)
7. Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina:He has started since he was a freshman. At 6-4, 310 pounds, he is aforce in the middle. He is quick and strong. He will be a top-10 pick.
8. Matt Reynolds, T, BYU (Jr.):This 6-5, 325-pound junior impressed as a first-time starter lastseason. He is good in pass protection, which the scouts love.

9. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford (So.):He will be a redshirt sophomore, so he can enter the 2011 draft. If hedoes, he has a real chance to go in the top 10. He is smart, understands the passing game and his arm is plenty good enough.

10. Allen Bailey, DT, Miami:He's a 6-4, 290-pound player who thought about coming into the 2010draft. He made a wise move. With another good season, he could be nearthe top of this list.

11. Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia:He's a 6-2, 200-pound corner who is better than fellow Cavalier ChrisCook, who went early in the second round this year to the Vikings. Hehas great speed for a corner his size.

12. Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa:He considered this draft, but opted to return to Iowa. He always seemsto show up when you watch the Hawkeyes. He did have an off-fieldincident this spring when he punched a cab driver.

13. Marcel Dareus, DE, Alabama (Jr.):He played in the big shadow of Terrence Cody in 2009, but if youwatched the BCS title game you saw what kind of player he could be.

14. Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska:At 6-1, he is a good cover player who showed up a ton when you watchedNebraska. He seemed to improve as the 2009 season moved along.

15. Aaron Williams, CB, Texas (Jr.):He's a 6-1, 200-pound corner who can run. He has been a good coverplayer for the Longhorns and he has skills that translate to the nextlevel.

16. A.J. Green, WR, Georgia. (Jr.):At 6-4, 205 pounds, he has good speed. He will be hurt some this seasonby being forced to play with an inexperienced quarterback, but he's thereal deal.

17. Joseph Barksdale, T, LSU:This big, athletic tackle will move from the right side to the leftside. It is there that scouts will truly come to appreciate him.

18. Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State:Watch how he flourishes this season with Jimbo Fisher running the wholeshow. This kid can move, he has a good arm and he's smart. I love him.He might be a better NFL quarterback than he was in college.

19. Gabe Carimi, T, Wisconsin:At 6-7, 325 pounds, he's another in a line of good linemen coming fromthis school. He replaced Joe Thomas at left tackle in 2008 and has beena quality starter since.

20. Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame (Jr.):At 6-6, 265, he is as good a prospect as Jermaine Gresham, who went inthe first round this year. He is a huge target and he can get down thefield.

21. DeAndre McDaniel, S, Clemson:He has great range and really shows up on Saturday. He had eight pickslast season. The Ed Reed comparisons are valid.

22. Nate Solder, T, Colorado (Jr.):He is a massive tackle at 6-9 and 310 pounds. He came to Colorado as atight end, which speaks volumes about his athletic ability.

23. Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame (Jr.):Golden Tate went in the second round this year and this kid is biggerand better. He was injured last season, which hurt his production.

24. Rahim Moore, S, UCLA (Jr.):Moore led the nation with 10 interceptions last season. He has a knackfor finding the football and he's a willing tackler.

25. Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State:He's a smaller defensive tackle at 6-1, 311 pounds, but he did 44 repsat 225 pounds. He's as good a player as Tyson Alualu, who was picked10th overall by the Jaguars. His height might hold him back.

Heisman winner Mark Ingram reminds our expert of another former SEC great who wore No. 22.(Getty Images)
26. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama (Jr.):He's an Emmitt Smith-type runner. He isn't explosive, but he makespeople miss. Tacklers don't get good angles on him.
27. Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri (Jr.):He is big, strong and has a good arm. He is the prototype. He wasslowed last year with an ankle injury, but he has all the tools.

28. Deunta Williams, S, North Carolina: He is 6-2, 205 and runs under 4.5. That's the formula for a big-time NFL safety. You need the speed to cover.

29. Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh: He is 6-6, 270 pounds and he has good speed off the edge. He could have been a second-round pick this year.

30. Evan Royster, RB, Penn State:At 6-1, 215 pounds, he has good size and speed. He makes people miss, but he's also strong in the hole. He should become Penn State'sall-time leading rusher this year.

31. Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina: He is 6-3, 225 and can run. He is a perfect 4-3 outside linebacker.

32. Julio Jones, WR, Alabama (Jr.):He's a big receiver who has been productive since he stepped on campus. His most important number will be his 40 time. How fast is he?

Just missed:Pat Devlin, QB, Delaware; Luke Stocker, TE, Tennessee; Von Miller, OLB,Texas A&M Mike Pouncey, G, Florida; Curtis Brown, CB, Texas;Brandon Harris, CB, Miami (Jr.); Jerrell Powe, NT, Mississippi;Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh (Jr.); Terrance Toliver, WR, LSU;Weslye Saunders, TE South Carolina; Kris O'Dowd, C, USC; Greg Jones,LB, Michigan State; Quan Sturdivant, LB, North Carolina; Jeremy Beal,DE, Oklahoma; Lee Ziemba, T, Auburn; Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska (Jr.);Janoris Jenkins, CB, Florida (Jr.); Jurrel Casey, DT, USC (Jr.); TravisLewis, OLB, Oklahoma; Jerrod Johnson, QB, Texas A&M DaQuan Bowers,DE, Clemson (Jr.).

Crazy A&M will go from having one guy draft in the 6th round to probably 3 in the first or second next year... Von, Jerrod, and Fuller...

A&M is putting a lot of their DB recruiting eggs in the Marcus Roberson (DB from STA) basket... Can he play? Terrell Williams is really working his connections in the South...

• If you're over 35, you might recall the name Tony Robinson. He was a star QB at Tennessee whose career was derailed by some off-field problems. In 1987, during the NFL players' strike, Robinson played one game for Washington, leading the ********' replacements to a 13-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Robinson's name comes up because new California University of Pennsylvania offensive coordinator Walt Harris watched tape of his QB, former Florida and Maryland player Josh Portis, and has visions of former Vols standout Robinson, writes Brian Herman:

"At his Florida high school, Robinson averaged 15 yards an attempt, not a completion," recalled Harris. "He was a dropback quarterback who could run, but Josh is faster and has a good arm. Josh is a great guy and a joy to be around. He has gifts very few players have."

Josh Portis is still around?
Delone Carter strikes deal to return to SU and football in the fall

By Jim O'Hara / The Post-Standard
[h5]April 27, 2010, 3:49PM[/h5]

Frank Ordoñez / Post-Standard file photoSyracuse football player Delone Carter's suspension will continue through this semester, but he will return to campus in the fall, according to his lawyer.Syracuse, NY - Syracuse University football player Delone Carter worked out a deal with SU officials this week that should allow him to return to school - and the football team - in the fall, his lawyer said today.

Carter was suspended two weeks ago after being charged with misdemeanor third-degree assault in a one-punch fight that followed a snowball-throwing incident on campus in February.

Lawyer George Raus said today Carter is to remain suspended for the remainder of this spring semester and for the summer semester. But he should be allowed to return to campus for the fall semester, the lawyer said.

"It's going to be hard on him," Raus said, noting Carter will have to make up any credit for incompletes he receives in this semester's courses as a result of being suspended two weeks ago.

By being banned from campus, he will lose out on the tutoring he normally receives as a result of being a member of the football team at SU, Raus said.

He also will have to perform 200 hours of community service," Raus said.

Raus said Carter hopes to be in good standing with SU in order to return to play football for a final season in the fall. His goal is to then go on to the NFL draft next April, the lawyer said.

Raus said he would be talking to the District Attorney's Office to see if there is any way to negotiate a settlement of the misdemeanor assault charge pending in City Court. Carter was charged two weeks ago with throwing one punch that caused serious facial injuries to another SU student Feb. 27.

Carter and fellow teammate Ryan Gillum had gotten out of Gillum's vehicle after it was struck by a snowball. The victim who was punched had nothing to do with the snowball-throwing incident, officials said.

Carter was charged in the case two weeks ago after he and Gillum were brought to police headquarters for questioning and Gillum implicated Carter as the person who threw the punch.

Raus said he believed the assault victim was agreeable to the resolution of the campus disciplinary matter brought against Carter as a result of the incident.

For the cats that played ball in here. Can you trust a teammate after they dropped dime on you? How will this affect a team's chemistry?

The only reason this is getting as much publicity as it is is because Syracuse is a college town and the university is its "pro" team. Students fight all the time and get off with a slap on the wrist.

Nolan... How do Irish folks feel about Quincy Aldridge and Lyndell Johnson? Seems like both are high on ND...

Johnson, yeah..good shape it seems.

Aldridge, idk.

ND hasn't attempted or hasn't recruited Texas well in forever, so who knows. I'm pretty satisfied with BK's & Co. ability to recruit so far, though.

Yeah, it's like A&M trying to dip into Florida I guess..

Offers out to Sean Ward, Kent Turene, Marcus Roberson, new one out to Jacoby Brissett last night... Kinda strange, but I guess they gotta use the new defensive staff's connections since they hired literally nobody with any real experience recruiting Texas...
