Definitely bored of the usual tapered/fade look that a lot of hood dudes rock here in LA. been rocking tapers since a child. My last haircut was around mid May and I've decided to let it grow out. I'm aiming for this look:

How long would you say the top their hair is from the pictures above? What about the sides? How would I go about this? Show the stylist pictures? So many questions!

My hair and face have a while to go before I get there but I definitely want to start as soon as possible. Thanks in advance

migit, i'm actually getting a similar haircut to that today. The top is probably 3-4 inches long. Looks like a 2 or 1 clipper length for the rest. I'm going to ask my barber for a 1 on the sides. Most of the guys in the shop don't shave the sides up that high though and usually tell me to stick with a 2 so they can blend it better.

But seriously, the top looks pretty long maybe like 3 inches and slicked back in the front. Then just a typical fade.

Not everyone has a natural part, and some people just want it more defined.

I thought you just had to keep combing your hair in a certain direction to form it and it sort of trains your hair to go that way. At least that's what I did when I had Mad Men style haircuts.

You can do it that way. But those pictures show a 'hard part' or a 'razor part'. The barber basically takes the machine or a razor and shaves off that hair to give it that look.

I wouldn't have noticed that if it wasn't pointed out. Also weird seeing people getting line-ups with slickbacks and combover styles. I just keep my hairline natural when it is that long.

As stated the part just gives more definition to the hairstyle, but when it grows back it's not that obvious as a person with a Caesar/Half Moon part.

Thinking of going one of these routes since I'm growing out my hair.  Not sure if it'll look as good since I have black hair and it's thicker.  I figure worst comes to worst, I'll just go back to a low fade...
