Agree on the 'dirty fouls.' These often come in situations similar to the Rondo Hinrich incident. Like the article said, if you getsomeone frustrated enough and are owning them on the court then these fouls tend to occur out of these situations. Happens all the time at the playground, you're beating a guy down so bad he doesn't even care about the game anymore - he just wants to send you a message by making a dirty play... I disagreethough about the 'remember for the rest of the game' part. That type of mindset often leads to malicious contact and a dirty foul. imo when you aretrying to hurt the guy in addition to the foul then it is dirty.Originally Posted by mYToAsterspeak
Hard foul is a play on the ball that will absolutely stop a scoring opportunity, that the player will remember for rest of game. Dirty is a foul that doesn't involve the ball and is overly malicious such as the derek fisher foul or the Kobe elbow to Artest throat. Hard fouls are Houston and Cleveland. Dirty are Lakers and Celtics.

the difference is very easy to explain....
1. "hard foul" = when your team does it
2. "dirty play" = when it gets done to you
