NT Poker heads: Finally started a poker blog, let me know what you think, ask questions here, etc.

I need this, I been playing on pokerstars and just cashed 20/700+ in the 16.50 tourney and wind up with only $50... It doesnt help when my AA gets cracked by A4 either...How am I suppose to play during the late stages of a tourney. Should I just wait for premium hands or go all in with Ace high in a table of 7-9 people.

Wait... you really Galen Hall? If so, congrats on your win at the PCA. I'll come back later to ask you some poker related stuff, but for now I'm curious to see what your sneaker collection is like hahaha and oh yeh what is your name on FTP? maybe I'll rail you if you're playing.

will be bookmarked and added to the daily rotation- question for you...any offers for sponsorship since the live score and online success? are you even interested in becoming sponsored?

I was looking for general strategy regarding the hand, and didn't feel like writing an essay describing a specific situation. I'm quite aware there are multiple elements to be taken into consideration.

this thread will probably full of this and "why do i always get my AA cracked" talk-

there is no such thing as "general strategy" without the context of the specific situation...you could get the hand 10 times in a tourney and have to play it much differently everytime
if you want general strat...fold...if your thinking is that basic your probably gonna get outplayed no matter what the flop/turn/river turns out to be

Do you do coaching? It would be interesting to see you coach someone up, turn them from zero to hero or something like that.

awesome. Because of your previous winnings I finally had the courage to go to the poker room at the casino, and for my first time playing against other people (not online) I did pretty well and I want to continue going but I know I need to get more knowledgable so this would definitely help out, thanks man. I'll stay tuned regularly

Pretty absurd. Allow companies to run in the US, tax them, ez game. Makes too much sense.

You are going to lose 99% of the tournaments that you play, and there are only a finite number of ways that it can go down. Cooler, suckout, lose a flip or multiple flips, go card dead, etc. Whining about a particlar beat isn't going to do anything since it's always going to be something. That's the first thing that you need to learn about tournaments.

In terms of late stage play, again it depends on your stack, your position at the table relative to other stacks and other players, and a million factors like that, but since it's an actual strategy question (whereas "how do I play JJ" is a tactical question) I can answer it pretty simply: Play more aggressive, play more fearlessly and apply pressure wherever you can. 3bet 35-45bb stacks into oblivion. 4bet people on 30bb stacks that can be light. 5bet people who can 4bet fold on 50bb stacks. Barrel really aggressively on certain stack sizes. Keep 3bets small in position with pot controlly hands to really apply lots of streets of pressure.

Basically, pressure, perssure, pressure. Don't wait for hands. The deeper you get in a tournament, the less your hands matter. When I won the UB200, I don't think I had the best hand once for like 2 hours.

I might make a vid of the 6max 100r last night, you can see a lot of these concepts in action.

Yup, that's me. I still got 20-30 pairs of shoes but I'm not as fanatic about stuff having to be SUPER RARE anymore or wearing a different pair every day. I looooove the lunarglide 2's though, my favorite shoe to come out in awihle.

My screen names are here: http://www.pocketfives.com/profiles/turk-malloy/ but you don't wanna sweat me on tilt lol I am so doomswitched there it's not even funny

I might pick up some students during the fall when I am back at school, since MTTs are tough since you have to dedicate an entire day to playing them, so I am planning on really studying cash and learning how to play it effectively, and being able to play some shorter sessions and maybe do some coaching. Probably be ~200 an hour or so, but idk maybe more if there is a lot of demand and I don't have a ton of free time.

lol, do whatever it is that you need to do to win 15 flips in a row. That thing is gonna be so absurdly huge.

People are really geeking out over the 5m sunday milly but I don't really get it. For me, it's just like maybe another $100 in EV on an already absurd sunday schedule

I always recommend that people start with Math of Poker by Bill Chen.

Not much in the way of tactics, but it really lays out the types of concepts that are important poker theory like how ranges interact, how to balance, what unexploitable means and when it matters, and how to really think about poker on a fundamental level.

How did you get started in playing poker and at what limit/stakes were you playing in?

What sources did you use to improve your game past and present?

What are some common mistakes you see players make online and live in mtts?

How would you exploit TAG and LAG players?

I started playing .25/.50 in high school, and then played more and more in college. I played mostly sngs and cash in college starting at 1/2nl and 10sngs and eventually moving up to 5/10nl and 200-500sngs before playing above my bankroll and crashing back down. I built back up with better bankroll management, and switched to tournaments this year, starting at lowstakes and slowly building up until I've been playing the highest stakes available since September.

I read some books and watched some videos, but the most improvement came from long skype conversations with my backer about a lot of nuanced spots, game dynamics and things like that.

When you have position on bad lags, you just abuse them constantly with 3bets and tons of flatting, and float them a ton, raise them a ton, cold 4bet them a ton, and just put heaps of pressure on them. When you're out of position, you play fewer hands, you 4bet with a wider, more merged value range and light less frequently, you hoodflat on certain stack sizes, you check/raise and check jam certain board textures and certain stack sizes a lot, and you really try to use their lagginess against them.

Against good tags, you just try to win as many battles as you can and slowly chip away at them, and against tags with position on you you just open a #**+!%*% and get out of the way when they play back at you.
