NY Heads Help: Cheap places / hotel to stay at plz?

Hello My NY NTers,
Gonna be heading over to NYC for a few days to visit, first time there, looked up priceline but all the hotels are like $250+

Anyone got any local tips for staying cheap?

Do priceline name your onw price, open your options up to include boroughs other than just Manhattan since you are just a train ride away. I stayed at the Fairfield in Queens for 44$ a night in the summer, Labor Day's weekend. It was I think 3 stops from Times Square, took maybe 10-12 minutes.

I just got back from a 10 day stay and used airbnb.com There are better deals to be found if you don't mind that you won't have services and amenities that hotels traditionally offer. I stayed in Brooklyn for a couple of nights and I didn't mind just taking the F train up to get into Manhattan etc

Normally I would stay in Tarrytown, NY (now I live in NYC for the time being) they have some nice hotels and they're affordable..plus you can take the Metro North into the city or you can drive into the Bronx and park your car for the day..
