Gotta love the offseason. Annual sky is falling report as far as the Knicks are concerned
This last season pissed me off because I feel like we underachieved based on bad coaching and decision making alone. We were never going to be any kind of contender, but to start the season how we did and to completely unravel the way we did was upsetting and really just pathetic. Playing Calderon for an entire season and not giving Grant a chance was one of the many absolutely baffling decisions we made. With that being said, the Knicks have pieces (believe it or not!) to make them a good team, but they must find new integral pieces to make the team finally have success.
Not even concerned about PG, and I don't want to waste all our cap on some "star" PG. That's not what we need. Spending a max on some perennially injured player like Conley is laughable. NOT what we need. All we need to do is upgrade from Calderon. Watch what I tell you...Wroten will be a stud next season, after fully recovering from his rehab. Not only is he a defensive stopper at the PG position, he is 6-6, a great athlete, has great passing vision, and was 2nd in the league to Russell Westbrook on penetration to the basket before his injury...plus he's 23. Provided he comes back healthy, with Grant backing him up...that is a skilled and athletic group of PG's. Add in a vet PG that can shoot and we're good. You don't need to add a Conley to this group. What he can offer us is not going to take us much further as a team. Especially not when his body falls apart halfway through the season. Wroten wants to be in NY (his favorite team) and Melo has already taken a liking to him. The pick and roll/pop with KP can be tough. 5-6-7 can be a problem next year, watch what I tell you...
More than anything, we need a starting SG that can shoot the 3 and play some defense. Once Afflalo opts out, you bid him good riddance and you add a SG in his place that can actually contribute with more consistency. We have to be looking at cats like Batum, Fournier, and Beal (although his injury history concerns me).
I haven't done my research and I don't know who is available, but we need 2 3-point shooters off the bench (PG and SG). Also, I think you have to keep a player like DWill because he has elite bench player potential that we didn't fully tap into due to bad coaching and inconsistent minutes. And he's cheap. Also keep Lance Thomas. I like him but I would let Gallo walk.
We basically have the best front court in the league in Melo, KP and Rolo is rock solid and will be even better next season. Keep O'Quinn, add in Willy Hernangomez, get rid of Seraphin and another scrappy/hustle/defender big man(Amundson? dunno...who else can we get?). We did not need Lamarcus. He is better suited as a follower on a great team...not a leader on an up and coming team. Him launching 20 ft fadeaways next to KP is NOT what we needed.
Other teams have success because they build on what they start...not scrap the team every off season and start over. We need continuity. Several pieces are on point...and some have to go. We just need to fill in the gaps more than anything and add a competent coach. I'm all for Blatt if he comes...he is a good coach. Do not let LeBron's diva ways convince you that he is some awful coach because I don't buy that for one second.
Phil Jackson's cavalier attitude has gotten on my last nerves. As fans, we deserve a team to be proud of, and his ego and obstinacy has really made it hard to watch. I hate being a Knicks fan, it really sucks lol. But I also can step back and notice what it is that we DO have...and I can see that we really aren't that far off. Headed in the right direction, but what do we do with it? This offseason is the last straw. Either Phil delivers or he gotta GTF outta here! Just my 2 cents.
