LA's Stults bothered by sprained thumb
Left-hander still hopes he can make next start Wednesday

MIAMI -- Dodgers starting pitcher Eric Stults was unable to throw a between-starts bullpen session Sunday because of a sprained left thumb but wouldn't rule himself out of his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Mets.

"I'll try to throw tomorrow," Stults said before Sunday's Dodgers-Marlins game. "It's better today than yesterday. I think I'll be OK for Wednesday, but I'll know tomorrow."

Stults was injured while fielding a bunt Friday night, jamming his thumb when his momentum after making a flip of the ball to first base put him into a headfirst dive on the infield grass.

Stults is 4-1 with a 3.82 ERA and the Dodgers are 6-1 in games he started after being promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque on April 11 to replace injured Opening Day starter Hiroki Kuroda.

Manager Joe Torre said that Jeff Weaver, who won Friday night's game in relief and lost Saturday night's, would start if Stults can't. Weaver is 1-0 in two starts this year.

Torre also said he plans to skip starter Eric Milton this week because of the day off Thursday. Milton made his first Major League start in two years Saturday night, walking four with a hit batter in four innings of a no-decision.

Milton would pitch out of the bullpen and be the long man if Weaver starts, Torre said.

Like lyons has been saying, if kershaw can locate his fastball and establish it early, he's such a different pitcher.

& getting some run production helps too.
