The trouble with Hong-Chih Kuo
By Tony Jackson on April 18, 2009 11:21 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | ShareThis
Talked to him briefly this morning. He said there is nothing wrong physically, but that he might be having some mechanical problems that he doesn't have time to do anything about when is on the mound on in a tight situation, as he usually is. He did say he is struggling with his confidence, though.
``I have just lost confidence,'' he said. ``I just have to keep working.''
Joe Torre said he would have no problem giving the ball to Kuo in a tight eighth-inning situation today, but that he would strongly prefer to find an innocuous situation to put him into, say with a big lead, so Kuo would be free to work on things and perhaps find himself. Joe also said Stan Conte indicated Kuo could probably pitch on back-to-back days now, something Torre has been reluctant to do because of Kuo's health history.
``(His struggles) might be based on the fact he hasn't worked a lot,'' Torre said.
Also, Cory Wade will have an MRI on Monday just to be safe before he goes to Arizona. And we asked Joe why Elbert was the move given that they could have moved Mkz to the 60-day DL and called up Jeff Weaver. Joe didn't really answer except to say that there isn't a 40-man roster spot open RIGHT NOW and that as such, Elbert was the easist move. But he did concede that Mkz probably will be moved to the 60-day soon.
Remember Chuck Tiffany? Well, he's back
By Tony Jackson on April 18, 2009 12:58 PM | Permalink | Comments (2) | ShareThis

Assistant GM Logan White, the Dodgers scouting director who drafted (second round) and signed Tiffany in 2003 -- the team had taken Chad Billingsley in the first round -- signed Tiffany again this week, this time to a minor-league contract. The Tampa Bay Rays had given up on the left-hander after he had trouble coming back from rotator-cuff surgery, releasing him about three weeks ago. But Logan saw him throw and deemed him at least healthy enough to take another chance on. Tiffany has been assigned to extended spring training for now, where he will try to pitch his way onto the roster of one of the Dodgers' affiliates. You may recall he was traded to Tampa Bay on Jan .14, 2006, along with pitching prospect Edwin Jackson, for relievers Danys Baez and Lance Carter. Jackson was a big part of the Rays' run to the A.L. pennant last year before being traded to Detroit in December. Baez is back in the majors with Baltimore after missing all of last year. And Carter hasn't pitched in the majors since the Dodgers released him after that season.

Here is the link to a story on True Blue L.A. about Tiffany that appeared on March 31.

By the way, forgot to mention this earlier, but James McDonald WILL start tomorrow's game and be on a regular starter's program, so it won't be a ``bullpen day,'' as Joe Torre had previously said it might be. The addition of Scott Elbert to the bullpen means McDonald won't be needed there today.

CHUCK IS BACK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Mamba, bring back Pedroza too PLEASEEEEEEEE

WALL: New Dodgers announcer Collins hopes history's on his side

On the wall behind the row of broadcast booths in the Dodger Stadium press box, a couple dozen 8x10 photos documenting the timeline of the Dodgers' radio and TV people have just been put on display.

On the far left, Red Barber.

On the far right, Eric Collins. Except his frame is empty.

Before he debuts Tuesdays on the Prime Ticket coverage when the Dodgers' road trip in Houston, Collins needs to get his official portrait snapped. That can be done while he's in town doing some practice reps with new partner Steve Lyons from Broadcast Booth No. 5.

"There are some expectations; I'm not stupid," said the 39-year-old Collins, who grew up in Cleveland listening to Herb Score's call of the Indians games, and living these days with his wife and two small daughters in Chicago.

"Vin Scully isn't going away any time soon. He's still got his fastball. I'm just happy to be part of the mix, finally doing major-league baseball games."

Don't take the writing, or pictures, on the wall to mean Scully, starting his 60th season with the Dodgers, is about to retire, and Collins is ready to pounce.

Since Scully has limited his travel on the road to games West of the Rockies, Charley Steiner was moving from radio to TV to fill in. But this offseason, the Dodgers decided for continuity's sake to keep Steiner on the KABC-AM (790) radio broadcasts with Rick Monday, and then find someone to work with Lyons.

Collins emerged from about 100 candidates who sent in tapes and resumes, on the strength of a resume that included doing baseball during NBC's Beijing Olympics, plus a variety of college sports for ESPN the last six years. He's also got minor-league experience for a couple of Midwest teams. A broadcaster since 1994, he's also filled in on Chicago White Sox games for the city's local affiliate, and spent a handful of years taking long bus rides for a couple of minor-league teams in the Midwest.

"His experience speaks for itself, he had great recommendations from NBC and ESPN, and we've really been impressed with his passion and energy level from his games in Arizona," said Lauryn Lukin, the Dodgers' VP of broadcasting. "He feels like a good fit for the team."

And, Lukin adds, don't read more into this than for what it is.

"It's hard enough in our jobs to know what we're doing for any long term, so it's not fair to anyone to look beyond this year right now," she said. "We all hope Vin stays as long as he wants. Hiring Eric isn't part of any process or discussion to replace Vin."

Reservations about Collins not being a local-grown talent, or detached because he's from a couple thousand miles away, will no doubt be on Dodger viewers' minds. And he understands that.

"To me, that's a non-issue," Collins said, confident without being boastful. "I've been doing my homework. The Internet and DirecTV's `Extra Innings' package means I haven't missed an inning."

The proof will eventually be in how the L.A. audience accepts him as part of the TV family.

"I think I'm kind of a quirky guy, and to me, that's not a negative, I like to be like that," Collins said.

Get the picture? Let Scully paint one for you.

"I really hope he's a big success and perhaps that would lead to bigger and better thing for him with the club," Scully said. "As for me ... day to day."
