No timetable for Votto's return
KANSAS CITY - Reds general manager Walt Jocketty says first baseman Joey Votto's return to the lineup is up to Votto.
But it sounds as if it won't be immediately after he's eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list.
Votto is eligible to come off the DL Sunday. That won't happen.
"We really haven't put any timetable on it," Jocketty said. "But I think he is feeling better and working out."
Votto will go on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment to get at-bats before being activated.
"I'm not sure when that will be," Jocketty said. "We're talking about it."
If Votto came to the Reds and said he wanted to go now, they'd allow it. begin it.
"When he says he's ready to go, he'll go," Jocketty said.
Votto has been on the DL since May 30 with stress-related issues. At Votto's request, the Reds have not been specific about his problem, other than to say "he's dealing with a personal matter."
The Reds went into Friday with a 5-7 record since Votto went out. That's a tribute to the good pitching. The team is struggling offensively.
Going into Friday, the Reds had scored a total of 36 runs in the 12 games that Votto had missed since being put on the DL.
"You have to man up," said Brandon Phillips. "You don't think about it before the play. You wait until after the play - when it hurts."
The Cincinnati Reds second baseman is playing with a healing hairline fracture on his right thumb and, strangely, it hurts the most when he throws.
man up, Joey.
