i lurk around all the socccer threads and i recall you being a portuguese fan.  why all the hate?

i just hope portugal qualifies.

Just because I'm Portuguese, I don't have to like everyone on the squad because of their nationality (no hostility towards you intended). Just like how I'm a USA fan but I hate damn near everyone on the squad besides Howard,Dempsey, Donovan, and Holden
laugh.gif

I'm just not a fan of how they play. Ronaldo with his constant @#$%@ing and diving and also vanishing from every big game. I used to be a fan of his until the 2006 WC
30t6p3b.gif
then his World Cup 2010 performance
sick.gif
Even though I hate him I was begging him to do something. Instead he just continued shooting from 40 yards out

Pepe/Carvalho with their dirty @#$ tackles. However I admit that these 2 are arguably the most important players on the squad.

Portuguese players I DO like: Meireles, Nani (used to dislike him for diving, but it's pretty funny to me now
laugh.gif
), Coentrao, Moutinho, Pereira.

And I'm not being biased cause I'm a Barca fan. I hate Porto (Sport Lisboa
pimp.gif
) and Madrid, but I like/dislike players based on how they play, not their team allegiances.

We have a championship caliber midfield and defense, but we need better forwards BADLY if we want to win this. Almeida and Postiga are far too inconsistent, and it doesn't help that Ronaldo goes ghost 80% of the time.

Just to note...ESPN (thankfully) has the Euro 2012 (and 2016) rights in the US.

I think it was 2004 when I paid $180 to see all the matches on TV.

Spain has to be the favorite. Germany will put up a good fight. France is the dark horse, they have massive potential with their current crop.

I hope England freakin' qualifies this time! Fabio is hopefully starting to understand that Garrard and Lampard just dont work together (keep playing Jack!).

Just to bring back some great memories from Euro 2008, with England not in it, I (like many others I'm sure) took on rooting for the resilient Turkish team.

These were some amazing games to watch live...

Turkey vs Czech Republic (Wont let me embed)

Turkey v.s. Croatia (Wont let me embed)

Turkey vs Germany (also wont let me embed)

Shame they lost like this but what a run of 3 games.

I honestly believe if it wasn't for the all the suspensions and injuries finally catching up to them against Germany in the semifinals, Turkey on the roll they were on, would have made the final and given Spain a good run.

Nothing in Euro 2012 will top this though...

GREATEST GOAL CELEBRATION MUSIC EVER!!!

I have always had a problem with the English National Team

Seems like players from England have terrible team chemistry with each other, which is why foreign players are crucial in the EPL. There were discussions a couple years ago to make it a rule that there must be at least 6 English players on the field at one time, to strengthen the national team (?)  Nothing ever came of it though.

I think scapegoating Ronaldo for the team performance is just as silly as the people who are doing the same to Messi now. Ronaldo is not a true #9 and they were expecting him to play as such, and especially last year, with Nani injured, no Moutinho in the squad, it was going to be nearly impossible for him to do anything with no supply, and no support. The team that Portugal fielded in the WC was simply not good enough. Was Ronaldo good? No, but in my eyes it had more to do with team selection and tactics that had him on an island than anything else.

I tip the Netherlands, Spain, and Germany to be tops (obviously) and England will once again disappoint if Capello is the manager.

I think it's time to kick England out of the group of European/world elites. For some time their assumed status as a team that could realistically threaten for a World Cup or Euro Cup has been based more on the influence of their domestic league than on the actual abilities and/or accomplishments of their national side. The fact of the matter is that they haven't made it out of the quarterfinals of a World Cup in 20 years, and the only time they made a final was when they hosted in '66. They have NEVER made it to the finals of a Euro Cup, and the only time in the last 40 years that they even made the semis was when they hosted in '96. They didn't even qualify in '08. But they'll still be touted as some sort of threat in the tournament because of their massively overrated and overexposed players (save Rooney). Their repeated disappointment is due to perception created by the endless media hype around them, in reality they're performing as they should given their talent. They're a team on par with Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and a number of other teams that are competent but not elite by European standards.
