Frost's name has been tossed into coaching searches since his first year as offensive coordinator in 2013, when he interviewed at Boise State. In 2014, he was reported to have turned down Colorado State's head coaching job.
Late this season, multiple sources told The Oregonian/OregonLive, Frost notified several within UO that he planned to leave, believing the time was right to lead a program himself.
"He was sure of it," a source said. "It was time to go."
Over the weekend Syracuse — whose athletic director had been at Boise State in 2013 — offered the job to Frost with a starting figure close to $1.2 million, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The figure is in line with the salary fired Orange coach Scott Shafer earned this year. Frost wanted to keep his options open, however, and quickly received an offer from Central Florida.
