Social media is by definition the technology that people use to share their opinions and insights, and forums definitely provide that. However, forums predate social media as we've come to know it and in that sense forums were a precursor. Forums haven't really evolved nor do they match what we've now come to recognize as traditional mainstream social media platforms so I could understand why someone would say it is different.

They are technically not correct in denying it is social media but is it's own unique form of "social media".

Yea but something existing before an all-encompassing term was created doesn't disqualify that thing from falling under that newly created umbrella.

Like you acknowledged, any platform that is used to socialize IS social media.
