Try and check your network settings. I found out after mine was on WiFi doing like 5mbps.

is this your first time trying to play online?
if so then you have to do this little tutorial, like it says, prior to joining your friends.

Yea this is my first time, but I've done all that. He picked me up at airport, I made my character, I beat him in that race, I've done the first mission where I gotta chase that car and get the drugs and take it back to his friend. Etc

Yea I saw those invites too but I was in another party chat with my boy trying to teach him how to play. He's kinda slow so trying to get him to change sessions and chats would've been a problem
