So how does that work? Say I've been down for 40 seconds.

like for scuba diving (down for minutes). you zero the rotating bezel at the minute hand when you go down. you just glance at the minutes hand and can see how many minutes you've been down.

nope just a dork that likes shoes, watches, bourbon and music.

also that's why it only rotates one way. if you accidentally knock the bezel against something while you're under it will always give you less time not more.
