I don't think there's one doctrine for success. You can be the laid-back type or the hands-on type, but nobody's ever really one or the other.

The best coaches we can think of have the capabilities to be genuinely both - and truthfully everybody is both, but the difference between Gregg Popovich and Joe Philbin is that some are both naturally, and some are both only because it's necessary/they know it's in their best interest to be both, so force what's not inherently there. I think with all of the things teams do together in the span of months - film study, practice, games, flights, road trips, breaking off into positional groups, etc. - there's more than enough opportunities for the players to pick up on what's genuine, and what's not genuine. Is this a guy I revere, or a guy I respect? Is this a guy I don't want to disappoint? In the case of Popovich, Belichick ... it's all three.

And I think a team that overachieves right away is a clear example of this that's understated. There's no reason the Seahawks should have beaten the Saints in the playoffs following the 2010 season. There's no reason Michigan should have been that bad under Brady Hoke, because of how those same players without their starting QB returning are playing under Jim Harbaugh.

Every coach is both, but we'll luck into some that are actually both. The problem is, when things aren't going according to plan for the team, the narrative is painted the easy way. Greg Schiano was a psychotic control freak. Raheem Morris was too player friendly. Truthfully, if you're not genuinely both, you're an endangered species once your team hits hard times.

if you win it doesn't matter what kind of coach you are, you can be Purcells or you can be Dungy

after a while being mediocre is going to doom any coach

to be fair, gus did lose the number 3 overall pick to an ACL this year. he would've helped a ton on defense (or on offense @coltfanb) 8o

That's all I was saying. They have a QB who, jokes aside, has made really tremendous steps forward after an all time bad rookie season to be pretty much a top 10 QB so far this season. You pair that with a deep threat/possession hybrid in Robinson, an insane deep threat in Hurns, a stud TE in Thomas and a high pedigree rookie back in Yeldon who's shown pretty good reads/talent when healthy. All the tools are there.

You're 100% correct though, OL is the top need. Bortles has been pretty bad when rushed. Better than last year but still bad.

I can't give T.J. Yeldon much credit yesterday when Kyle Williams wasn't on the field.

They still have shoelace as well right? Yeah their offense has everything you need except a good OL

. An offensive minded coach could have a lot of fun with those pieces...

Seriously?

The kid had a groin injury and still ran for 115 and a TD (should've been 2 if Gus didn't goof and hand the ball to Toby 4 times at the GL :{)

That's like me saying I can't give Diggs much credit yesterday because he faced a poor Lions secondary. At the end of the day it's about results and production, get it however you can regardless of who's on the opposite side of the field.

He didn't have a groin injury if he ran for 115 yards. He used to have a groin injury if he ran for 115 yards.

To the other poster - I didn't think you were calling him AD, but I'm questioning his position even in the grey area. He hasn't had a game yet over 4.3 YPC against a good run defense or against a team not missing its best run-blocking lineman who is also one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL.

Obviously, time and patience is on his side in this league. He's only played seven games. But what are we hyping yet?
