You usually have to call to see if you are summoned as the automated message will say whether or not you have been selected. If selected, there isn't much you can do without getting in trouble.

However, once you show up, you can request to the judge that you have something else to do, but it should be reasonable. They'll usually let you go, but yeah.

Write them a letter. You carpool to work, commute 1 hour each way, etc. Too much of a hassle to your schedule and that of the person you carpool with.

They will write you back that you are excused. But you have to send them that letter, otherwise they expect you to appear.
