this season is horrendous

what do you guys think we (edmonton) have to do?

I haven't followed the Blues that much this season but I'd guess it's because they started going to the younger guys a lot more this season, thevets Kariya, Tkachuk and MacDonald not living up to billing and just the lack of scoring in general. Mason's GAA is 2.65 and Conklin is 2.49...

Commentator was right though you can't leave your feet and jump at Sharp like that even if he was coming through the zone w/his head down. Should have beencharging. That Jackman forearm shiver should have been called too. Big hit, but Weaver better make sure he does not put his head down at any point the nexttime they play Chicago.

We can't beat em, so we gotta beat ON em. Blackhawks are way too good.

As far as Murray goes, his message was "getting old." Especially since the Blues are a mid-market team and will never splurge on a big time freeagent, this teams' success is solely based around the idea of harvesting young talent and adding role players via free agency. Murray is a "veteranscoach" and the message was not mixing with the entire roster.

I think that the Blues caught lightning in a bottle last January-April and made this year's team with additions of Kariya and Johnson have sky highexpectations with middle of the pack talent.

I wish I was at that game last night. Even though we got it handed to us, at least they weren't afraid to lay it all out there. Weaver

with that hit.My God.

That wasnt a charge, he just hit him so friggin hard he came off the ice...

Definitely an elbow, though.

Pittsburgh is in a serious slide right now. The Devils keep on winning. To bad there are no first round byes in hockey.

The Colorado Avalanche might look to acquire Chicago Blackhawks winger Kris Versteeg in the offseason.

This is what Edmonton Journal writer Jim Matheson is hearing. He adds, "A second-round draft pick and University of Wisconsin defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk might get it done."

The Avs are looking to add pieces to their young core to make themselves a legitimate contender, while the Blackhawks will need to dump salary this offseason after signing Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith to extensions.

The Minnesota Wild have nine players who will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the season, and they will be the most likely trade candidates come the March deadline.

Kim Johnsson, Marek Zidlicky, Owen Nolan, Eric Belanger, Derek Boogaard, Petr Sykora, Shane Hnidy, Andrew Ebbett and John Scott could all be traded. Among them, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune suggests Johnsson, Zidlicky, Nolan and Belanger are going to be attractive trade assets for other teams.

The Wild want to keep Johnsson and Zidlicky but if they demand too much in the offseason, they won't be able to give them the money they want because they have a handful of free agents they want to retain.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1933Tomas Plekanec trade talk might heat up near the trade deadline, especially if Plekanec makes it clear that he wants upward of $7 million -- a number the Montreal Canadiens won't be able to afford.

CyberPresse writes that because of all the things GM Bob Gainey wants to do in the offseason, including retaining Carey Price, he may not have the money to keep Plekanec.

One previously rumored trade was between the Montreal Canadiens and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=phiPhiladelphia Flyers, according to a user on the Habs Inside/Out blog, who writes that he has a "reliable source" who tells him the Flyers are looking to send http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=89Brian Boucher and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=2383Jeff Carter over to Montreal for Plekanec, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=305Hal Gill and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3116Jaroslav Halak. This deal would solve a handful of problems for both teams, especially at goalie.

Habs Inside/Out wrote, "Although the trade would be similar in terms of immediate cap hit, we'd be taking on Carter's $5 million salary for next season too. Not an excessive contract given his ability, but it's more than Plekanec earns and more than it would cost to re-sign him."

KHL: KHL president Alexander Medvedev might also swoop in with a huge deal. He said he's already talked to Kovalchuk and can offer a better deal than the NHL because of tax laws.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=bosBoston Bruins: Won't happen until February. A trade would include Blake Wheeler and Tuukka Rask.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=pitPittsburgh Penguins -- No money, no space.

One Western Conference executive told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that that Chicago Blackhawks may get involved in the http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1175Ilya Kovalchuk bidding. Of course, given the Blackhawks' money trouble, they'll have a lot of hoops to jump through, but Kovy may soon be suiting up with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

If Kovalchuk doesn't agree to a contract with the Thrashers, he will likely be traded during the draft weekend in June, according to the Hockey News.

Kovalchuk will be hoping to go to a stable franchise with a bright future -- something he doesn't think he has in Atlanta.

The Blackhawks will likely use Kovalchuk as a short-term rental to boost them to a Stanley Cup this season. They will likely try to get rid of some of their big contracts, like Cam Barker and Kris Versteeg, LeBrun writes.

LeBrun writes that other potentially interested teams include: Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Boston.

[h5]Jaroslav Halak | Canadiens[/h5]

Jaroslav Halak may not be traded until the offseason, especially given his strong play. But if both he and Carey Price are on board at the start of next season, GM Bob Gainey will have a problem.

Both goalies have said they want to be a No. 1 stopper, and the Montreal Gazette suggests today that Halak will be the one to go. Price is likely the golden boy, and at 22, is still the goalie of the future. Halak's GM, Allan Walsh, did not confirm or deny that Halak requested a trade, as reports have suggested.

However, Gainey does not like negotiating contracts in-season, so unless a trade is made, Halak's future in Montreal won't be settled until the offseason. And a trade will likely be delayed until then, too, unless a good offer is made close to the trade deadline.

Gainey will try to net a top-six forward for whichever goalie he trades, like he tried to do with the Flyers.

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke told the Toronto Star that he was opening negotiations with the free agents he wants to keep, but he wouldn't specify who these players are.

The most likely candidates to be traded are the unrestricted free agents -- and most likely among those are Matt Stajan and Vesa Toskala. Trade rumors have revolved around those two players for a long time.

The Star suggests Wayne Primeau and Alexei Ponikarovsky will likely stay, but for a transitioning team, anything can happen.

In any trade, the Leafs will likely be looking to acquire draft picks, because they traded their next two first rounders to the Boston Bruins for Phil Kessel. And if Burke wants to acquire an elite restricted free agent this offseason, he'll need that pick to give as compensation.

Top Email

Chris Osgood has been relegated to the backup role as Jimmy Howard has played better as of late. According to the Edmonton Journal, Howard is now the No. 1. And Osgood is "starting to chafe at not playing."

The Detroit News writes that once the playoffs come, Osgood will be the start -- no question about it. But if Howard turn into a true No. 1, then it might not be such a sure thing. Still, coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit News, "I've got a Stanley Cup because of Chris Osgood. He's been very, very good. ... He's got all the tools and he knows the ropes. He'll dig in and find a way."

The emergence of Howard means the Wings won't look to acquire one of the goalies on the trade market.

Despite all the talk about the different candidates who could captain the http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=washttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=wasWashington Capitals, one veteran says there's no question about who it will be.

Mike Knuble told the Edmonton Journal that it will be http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3101Alex Ovechkin -- "It's a pretty easy choice. Ovie is the face of the franchise."

The other big name candidate is http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3666Nicklas Backstrom. Before the Washington Times folded its sports section, the paper said Backstrom is the top choice.

However, coach Bruce Boudreau told the Washington Post that he is looking for a captain he can talk to. And that might mean http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=2180Brooks Laich is the favorite to claim the job. We know from the preseason that Boudreau likes Laich, and both are Canadian which might help the communication.

However, Ovechkin has improved his English -- which Knuble says was the only reason he didn't previously get the job -- so he might be a shoe-in.
