BEATING FORMER COACH EXTRA MOTIVATION FOR BEERMEN

Danny Seigle and Olsen Racela swear they are highly motivated coming into the best-of-seven finale of the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup.

Sounds funny, but the two stars said beating Jong Uichico their former coach has become a challenge to them.

Game 1 of the tug-of-war for the league's most coveted championship is set at 7:20 p.m. Friday at the Araneta Coliseum. It follows the 4:35 p.m. encounter for third place between Red Bull and Talk N Text.

The titular series mark the third time that the San Miguel Beermen and the Barangay Ginebra Kings will be facing each other in the Finals.

On the past two occasions (1999 Reinforced Conference, 4-1) and 2001 (All-Filipino Conference, 4-2), San Miguel emerged triumphant with Uichico at the helm.

But a surprise revamp by the management during the off-season saw the low-keyed, soft-spoken coach being "traded" to Ginebra and now Uichico is a target of his former troops.

"I'm extra motivated in this series because I want to beat my former coach Jong Uichico," Racela told sportswriters during a press conference Thursday noon at the Emerald Restaurant along Roxas Blvd.

Beside claiming the title and taking the scalp of their former coach, Danny Seigle said this series is also about bragging rights.

Reyes readily admits his team enjoys a deeper bench and manpower. But he stressed Ginebra has the crowd and the energy that wears down opponents.

"From my point of view this series is anybody's ballgame," he said. "Both teams are well motivated so I expect this showdown to be a very interesting and well played series."

Big men, backcourt matchups also of interest of the season.

Like Uichico, San Miguel back up center Romel Adducul may also hold the same motivation against his former team, whom he helped steer to the 2004 Fiesta Conference title and the 2004-05 Philippine Cup championship.

The power-playing 6-foot-6 former San Sebastian stalwart was traded by Ginebra early into the conference in a three-team deal that also involved one-time Red Bull star Lordy Tugade.

Also of interest is the backcourt matchup pitting the league's current resident superstar guard in Jayjay Helterbrand against emerging backcourt wizard Lewis Alfred Tenorio, and the retro encounter between San Miguel veteran Olsen Racela and Ginebra counterpart Johnny Abarrientos.

With Eric Menk still a doubtful starter for the Kings, Hatfield and Rafi Reavis will have their hands full trying to contain San Miguel's bruising big men Dorian Pena and two-time league Most Valuable Player (MVP) Danny Ildefonso.

Talk N Text Phone got awesome performances from its frontline forces Friday night as the Phone Pals defeated Red Bull 124-111 and salvaged third place in the 2006-07 Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

As if they were playing for the championship, Asi Taulava summoned all his energy and strength and led all scorers with 30 points that went his 15 rebounds as the Phone Pals celebrated their best finish in an all-Filipino conference since losing to Barangay Ginebra in the same tournament two years ago.

And with Jay Washington dishing out a career game and Harvey Carey coming up with an A-1 performance, the Phone Pals practically outplayed the Barakos all night.

Washington, was almost flawless offensively, making 12-of-17 attempts from the field and finished with a career-high 27 points while Carey, tallied 22 points and matched Taulavas 15 boards as Talk N Text wound up with a Top-3 finish for the fifth time in the last seven conferences.

It was also the highest finish for TNT head coach Derick Pumaren since leading the now- disbanded and Vergel Meneses-bannered Sunkist squad to the Promised Land in 1995.

The Phone Pals were up by seven points after one quarter and they sustained the momentum in the second by hitting 76 percent of their shots from the perimeter (13-of-17) for a 63-52 halftime lead.

After losing to the San Miguel Beermen in Game 7 of their semifinal duel last Wednesday, the Barakos showed up for Fridays game seemingly without motivation.

Taking advantage of the situation, the Phone Pals quickly jumped the gun on the Barakos and went on to lead by as many as 24 points in the third quarter.

Cyrus Baguio showed the way for Red Bull with a career-high 27 points. Enrico Villanueva added 18 points and Junthy Valenzuela had 15 for Red Bull, which had assistant coach Gee Abanilla calling the shots in the absence of head coach Yeng Guiao, who was serving a one-game suspension for his unsportsmanlike conduct in Game 6 of the semifinals against the Beermen.

TUGADE, SEIGLE SIZZLE IN BIG SMB GAME 1 WIN
Torrid shooting spree gives Beermen early lead in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup Finals, smothering Barangay Ginebra, 118-94, before a crowd of over 14,000 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Tugade played his best game in a San Miguel jersey, firing five triples and totaling 27 points, while Seigle added 22 points and nine rebounds as the
Beermen surprised the Kings with a jackrabbit start which they sustained up to the final buzzer.

The Beermen dealt the Kings a 22-point blowout minus Danny Ildefonso, but coach Chot Reyes tried to downplay their feat.

"It wasnt easy by any means. It was a battle and the final score wasnt the true reflection of the game," said Reyes.

Reyes said their torrid shooting spelled the difference in the contest.

"Obviously, I didnt expect the margin to be that big. It so happened that we shot very well. And I hope that we continue to shoot that way in the second game," Reyes added.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, however, admitted it was murder.

"We couldnt keep in step with them. They were always one step ahead of us. Hopefully, we can make the necessary adjustments in Game Two," said Uichico.

LA Tenorio broke the ice with a short jumper, Dondon Hontiveros followed it up with a triple and the Beermen held on to the lead throughout in an overpowering performance that spoke well of their great determination to win an 18th PBA crown.

The Beermen, the leagues most winningest ball club which has beaten the Kings in two previous title-playoff encounters, made it 9-3 in their championship games with Tugade and Seigle leading the way for the team.

Tugade and Seigle, incidentally, have five Finals MVP plums between themselves.

"To be very honest, I expected Lordy to play well but not this well. He struggled in the Red Bull series but its understandable since his former teammates know how to guard him," said Reyes.

Dorian Pena, Tenorio and Chris Calaguio also hit their strides, giving the Beermen tremendous boost as they dominated the Ginebra side which drew significant numbers only from four players in Mark Caguioa, Rudy Hatfield, Ronald Tubid and Johnny Abarrientos.

Eric Menk showed up in uniform but sat out the game.

The Beermen carried a 62-42 bulge into the final half while converting 58.8 percent of their 17 three-point attempts in the first 24 minutes of play.

Tugade was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the second period and totaled four treys and 18 points in the first half. Tenorio and Hontiveros added two apiece and Seigle and Calaguio one each.

Tugade sizzled from the long court while Pena did his job in the paint as the Beermen pulled away from a 29-23 lead at the start of the second quarter.

The Beermen built huge leads early despite 18 turnovers in the opening half.

A freak shot by Calaguio off a foul by Abarrientos beat the buzzer at the close of the third canto. Calaguio made the accompanying free throw to make it 89-72 for San Miguel.

For San Miguel Beer, it helped that coach Chot Reyes knows so well that Rafi Reavis is a poor free throw shooter.

San Miguel Beer gambled on sending Reavis to the line at endgame and reaped good dividends, making it two in a row over Barangay Ginebra, 104-101, in their 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven title playoff Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Reavis actually muffed not only two free throws but a three-pointer with the game on the line in the closing seconds, allowing the Beermen to successfully follow up their 118-94 victory in Game One Friday.

"It was a product of intense discussion and, in the end, our decision was to let Rafi shoot from the stripe," said Reyes. "We didnt want to give a three-pointer. We figured out that if he makes both shots, we still have a chance."

The Beermen put Reavis in the pressure-cooker after Danny Seigle scored on a backdoor play with Olsen Racela, pushing San Miguel ahead, 101-99, time down to 24 seconds.

A 53-percent free throw shooter, Reavis did succumb to the pressure, then San Miguel gained more breathing room on a charity by Seigle in the ensuing play.

A layup by Rudy Hatfield followed by a split from the stripe by Willie Wilson gave Ginebra a chance to send the game into overtime with 12.2 seconds left.

Alas, the ball again went to Reavis, who was all alone in the right flank. The 6-foot-8 Fil-Am forward opted to take a trey which went a bit strong, enabling the Beermen to gain a two-game-to-zero lead in the series.

"Two-zero is nothing. If we get another win, then we have a better chance," said Reyes, who experienced bungling such a lead while still with the Coca-Cola Tigers playing the Talk N Text Phone Pals for the 2003 All-Filipino crown.

"We still have a job cut out for us. With Eric Menk likely to get stronger and Danny Ildefonso still on a day-to-day status, its incumbent upon our big men to hold the fort for us," Reyes added.

San Miguel dominated the first three quarters with Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros and Lordy Tugade at the forefront of their attack. Seigle scattered 31 points, Hontiveros added 22 and Tugade chipped in 19.

Racela contributed 11, including a three-pointer he made after Ginebra closed in at 95-96 with time down to 1:35.

But the contest boiled down to a free-throw shooting in the end.

"In a battle between two evenly matched teams, it came down to free throws. And thats the way the game is played to put the ball in the hole," said Reyes.

"We can do everything but in the end, the team which puts the ball in the cylinder will win," Reyes added.

Reavis redeems himself with big game as Kings close in at 1-2ed missing their shots, and became sloppy on defense.

Sensing something was wrong with their foes, the Kings stepped on the gas and slowly wore out the Beermen.

The scoring champ emerged as the tournaments best.

Mark Caguioa, the Barangay Ginebra top gun whos been leading the tourney in scoring, beat out San Miguel Beer ace forward Danny Seigle for the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup Best Player of Conference honors.

The 6-foot-1 Caguioa raised his hand in the air then pointed a finger to the Ginebra fans when his name was announced the winner of the coveted award before Game Four of
the Barangay Ginebra-San Miguel Beer title collision Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

"Im greatly honored and Im sharing this award to my teammates," said the Glendale Community College product.

Caguioa, the No. 3 pick in the 2001 draft behind Willie Miller of Red Bull and Mike Hrabak of Shell, won the BPC plum over Seigle, Rudy Hatfield, Sta. Lucia rookie Kelly
Williams and Talk N Texts Willie Miller after garnering 1333 overall points and beating his closest rival by 203 points.

The Ginebra scoring machine gained his fourth individual award in the league after winning the Rookie of the Year honors in 2001 and making it to the Mythical Second Team the last two seasons.

Seigle was denied a third BPC plum as the prolific San Miguel Fil-Am forward accumulated only 1130 overall points.

Hatfield came in third with 623 points, Williams fourth with 387 and Miller fifth with 378.

Caguioa emerged the runaway winner for topping the stats race and the balloting among his fellow players, the media and the PBA officials.

Only the ABC Sports votes went to Seigle.

Picking up from where he left off last year, Caguioa is currently averaging a conference-best 24.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists a game. He averaged 25.3 points per game in the previous Philippine Cup.

He scored at least 30 points in six of their last nine games dating back to the semis and had a streak of 11 straight games with at least 20 points in the eliminations.

Hes also ranked No. 7 overall in the conference in assists and No. 2 behind Purefoods Kerby Raymundo in average minutes played.

Caguioa is one of only three players averaging at least 20 points a game in the tourney. The others are Seigle and Miller

Fast & Furious backcourt combo leads prolific Kings scoring paradeed rejoicing the individual triumph of Mark Caguioa for being named the Best Player of the Conference.

Ginebras remarkable effort in Game 4 led the Kings to new league records.

Ginebras total points went down as the highest in a game since its 1996 team defeated Mobiline, 149-122, in the eliminations of the Governors Cup on October 5.

It is also the highest output in a PBA Finals since Shell defeated Anejo, 156-134, in Game 3 of the 1990 First Conference.

Their total points in Games 3 and 4 also made the Kings the first team to score at least 130 points in successive Finals Games since Games 4 and 5 of the 1990 First Conference Finals between Anejo and Shell.

But we better expect the worst in Game 5. Im sure San Miguel will come out strong, Uichico said.

Caguioa finished with 25 points, Jayjay Helterbrand had 21 and Sunday Salvacion contributed 20 to underscore Ginebras superb shooting all evening. The Kings shot 55 percent (43-of-7 8)

from the field while the Beermen hit 49 percent (39-of-79).

And with Rafi Reavis, Rudy Hatfield and Eric Menk asserting their dominance in the lane, the Kings again mugged the Beermen off the boards, 47-38.

I think Im doing a terrible job as a coach preparing the team, declared SMB coach Chot Reyes, visibly dejected following his teams back-to-back blowouts.

Just like in Game 3, the Beermen succumbed because they failed to match the Kings competitive fire.

After Dondon Hontiveros (20 points) gave the Beermen a 21-19 lead with 4:35 left in the opening quarter, the Kings starring Caguioa, Hatfield and Menk answered with a 13-3 run to give Ginebra a 32-24 lead at the end of the period. The Kings never trailed after that.

Ginebra 146 Caguioa 25, Helterbrand 21, Salvacion 20, Menk 15, Hatfield 14, Abarrientos 11, Tubid 9, Macapagal 8, Mamaril 7, Reavis 7, Holper 5, Seigle 4.
