^It really depends on what you like to shoot... You shouldn't buy one lense or another because its cheap or because you think you need more lenses. You should buy a lense because it fits a particular need better than the lense you have. But personally I think just based on the sharpness alone a prime lens gives you verses that of zoom lense. I would get the 50mm prime or atleast one prime lense. Prime lenses are going to be sharper than their zoom counter parters just as means how a lense is constructed. And It's the straight lense i.e. there should be no distortion on shots with it so it's good lense to have. Where as 55-200mm gives you a great deal of range but I'd be curious to see how sharp it is and who's to say you really need that range...

Im in the same boat. but the price difference between the D40 and D40x seals it up for me.
