Official Sacramento Kings Off-season Thread

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The immature rookie inched closer to behaving his way to the minors, the foundation of the future disclosed he is now aching emotionally as well as physically and that his All-Star plans have been adjusted accordingly, and stories popped from two very credible reporters that Geoff Petrie is close to being fired as head of basketball operations in a move the Kings would regret for years. Oh, and coach Paul Westphal is also close to being shown the door, but we’ll stick to what isn’t obvious.

The possibility is increasing that the Kings will have serious conversations about sending DeMarcus Cousins, the No. 5 pick in June and projected future starting center, to the NBA Development League. Kicking him out of practice hasn’t changed his sloppy focus, fining him hasn’t improved his attitude and, most recently, pulling him from the opening lineup Thursday against the Bucks for giving a choke sign to the Warriors two nights earlier hasn’t nudged him in the right direction. So, some quality time with the Reno Bighorns becomes a growing thought.

The only way to right this ship is to hope they actually get the #1 pick this time.

Maybe the Kings can complete a trade, but it would have to involve throwing together a lot of their pieces to get back something worthwhile. Petrie would likely have to gut the team in order to get back one decent piece, but in the long run it would be a good move since there's no way this current team will ever turn into something good.

Plus, trading multiple players for one or two and filling out the roster with D-League replacements would be a good way to increase their chances for the first pick.

If Donte can just play solid defense on the opposing team's best front court player and make his open 3's, great.

You writing off Cousins already? Not the first time you were wrong about the Kings. Like Kevin Martin right? How you feel about that trade now?

I believe a PG that will provide veteran leadership and both Evans and Cousins respect and listen to will be key.

Steve Nash.

Sidebar, Nelson and Williams are good candidates as well, but are they good leaders? Williams might start crying after the losses start piling up.

My point is that the Kings' first priority is to find a second option, another "star" quality player to play next to Tyreke.
I'm not writing off Cousins, Greene, or Omri, but I am writing them off as players that can turn into legitimate second options. They will be role players at best. Cousins might prove me wrong and become a star, but I think it'll be hard for him to correct his horrendous decision making, underdeveloped skills, and attitude in order to become one.

This isn't saying that Cousins and the other guys aren't worth keeping. They can become great role players on a good team. But the team is so horrible right now because it's Reke and a bunch of role players that don't compliment each other whatsoever.

And I don't remember exactly what I said about Martin, but I still believe he was a horrible fit next to Tyreke. The Kings may be a little worse off without him and he might be doing pretty well in Houston, but there's no way the Kings would've ever turned into a solid team with him on it. This was an example of how I said that the Kings might need to give away some players in order to get the opportunity to improve in the future.

Plus Landry was a smart move at the time. He was supposed to provide some interior presence rather than be a backcourt player that conflicted with Tyreke at times. It just turned out horribly because he has severe shortcomings (defense and rebounding) and the Kings have no players that can make up for them (those are Dalembert's skills, but he hasn't done them well enough to cover Landry's back).
